Problems texturing a cylinder

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to texture a cylinder with an image but am having problems. I'm following a tutorial on Lynda.com where a guy uses the paint bucket tool to apply an image to a cylinder. Initially the image doesn't fit properly so the guy adjusts the size of the image in the materials palette. I would like to do this as well except I don't see any place in the materials palette where I can adjust the size of the image. Could it be that the free version of Sketchup 7 doesn't have this ability. Could someone please let me know? Thanks.

Have you gone to the edit tab in the materials window? thats where you can find the texture sizing tools, dont forget to enlarge the window a bit, as well, as otherwise the bottom of the window can get cropped off.
Alternatively, if you go view->hidden geometry, then right click on one of the faces of the cylinder->texture->position->green handle you can resize it manually.

Also, have a look at the "Description field" of this model in the Warehouse about how to 'wrap' an image around a cylinder and why the size of the image is important (note that it's a different approach there)

I do not see the edit tab in the materials window. This is what I see...
For you alternative suggestion I wasn't able to see the texture option that you wrote of. This is what I see...
If I'm doing something wrong please let me know. Otherwise could you tell me why I'm not seeing what you wrote of?

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried texturing the cylinder with the method you suggested. It worked but it did not fit the texture to the cylinder "perfectly." Here is what it looks like...
Is there a way to adjust the texture once it's been placed on the cylinder? Please let me know, thanks.

You need to have a texture applied to the cylinder for the second method to work.
I didnt realise you were on a mac, which is why the edit tab is not there, i imagine theres something similar, though. hopefully some mac savy person will pop along with the answer shortly...

Hi Justin,
Above (when you have hidden geometry on) you don't have the "Texture" context menu item because you are not using a texture at all (just the default colour - and you can obviously not position a colour).
In your second (checked pattern) cylinder, turn hidden geometry on position the texture on ONE facet (resize or move up/down) then sample that positioned image (Alt+Paint bucket) and paint the whole cylinder. If the perimeter is equal to the width of the image, you'll have a perfectly wrapped image (especially if it tiles seamlessly). If not, there will be a visible seam.

Thanks for your advice it worked perfectly. I have one more question. When I import this textured cylinder into Photoshop CS4 extended the texture goes back to the way it was before. I'm not sure why it is doing this. Do you have any ideas about this?

Sorry but no idea at all (I don't use CS4). In this case it's obvious that the UV mapping doesn't get through for some reason.

Thanks for that tutorial on 3D Warehouse Gaieus. I have several models of stairs that revolve around a central wood column and I could never get that quite right - your tutorial solved the problem. Now I want to experiment with the method on the front bullnose edge of a stair tread which can get kind of messy when textured.
