Cutting holes
-
Hi
This is drivng me nuts (although managed to get most of the other stuff down
How on earth do i "cut a hole"...
I have a rectangle in 3D on layer0, from what i have read, i draw another rectangle on one face, make a componant with "cut hole" when i do this then delete this new rectangle i created i have a solid orginal 3D rectangle left with no hole!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have also tried this with a solid 3D object through the orginal 3D objects, still no hole!!
Must be something i am missing?
Many Thanks

If you want the hole in the rectangle, just draw another rectangle on it first then select the smaller inner face and press delete
The hole-cutting-component thing is more for making components that automatically cut through a single face. A good example of this sort of use is window components.
p.s. Its worth remembering that layers in SU only control visibility. They dont effect how geometry interacts.

Ashley,
Remus is right. You made a component of the small rectangle then deleted it. A component or group is not interacting with the surrounding geometry (which can be very helpful). Instead you should delete the inner face of the second rectangle BEFORE creating a component. If you then want a component to cut with, select the lines about this new hole and make a component, with "cut hole" selected. Then placing that component will cut a hole.

Ashley,
The guys above beat me (do I need to chat on IM all the time?) but anyway...
If you are trying to make a component with a cutting feature, in the last step, when you delete the rectangle, make sure to delete only the face of it inside the editing context of the component (and not delete the whole component).

Got this to work

Can not get this to work either (same result, delete the new shape that was supposed to "cut" leaves everything else as it was before).
Many Thanks

Ashley,
There has just recently been a topic about certain aspects of components cutting holes here:

Hi
Looked it over, however after playing i found the object you want to cut a hole in needs to be "exploded" THEN you can do stuff with it, however need to be carful as can destroy that object as well.
Once done then "create group" again after.
Seems to create abit of a nightmare with paintbucket but it works
Many Thanks

If you double click on the component/group you want to edit you will enter the component, so you dont have to explode it first
-
Also, in the Component browser window, you can right click on any component and select "Properties" which will pop up the same dialog as you get when creating a component. Now here you can set any gluing/cutting attribute without exploding the component first to "remake" it.
Note that not every changes made here will seem to affect the components already in place so you might re-insert them into the model.
