Importing TIN from AutoCAD and Projecting Aerial
-
Hi everyone,
Hoping that someone can help me out with the issue I am experiencing. I am generating a .tin with a terrain modeling program (Bentley Inroads) and saving the triangles I generated as a .dwg file. When I import into Sketchup V. 7 (pro) the triangles appear as a component. I have then gone through the process of aligning an aerial image to the triangle network and projecting it onto the surface using the paintbucket tool. However, when I do this I get a lot of distortion and no clear image on my surface. My guess is that the problem lies in the fact that I am importing a large number of unconnected triangles which are importing as individual FACE features. I think I somehow need to convert these into a single mesh SURFACE feature, but I am unsure of how to accomplish this. Note that I am using the "merge coplanar faces" command but it is only merging some of my triangles.
Help would be appreciated, thanks!!

Hi Andy, are the triangualted faces actually being imported as separate components? Any chance you could upload the model? Or at least a piece of it?

If the triangles are coming in as separate components: select them all->right click->explode, apply your texture then regroup.
If the whole lot is coming in as a single component, you need to double click on the components to edit it, then apply the texture.

Yes, it seems that you need to explode your components if you want them to be one, single mesh. You cannot "merge coplanar faces" if they are in different contexts (i.e. in separate components).
Ideally I would wish if the edges of these (neighbouring) triangles match each other so that after the explosion they simply merge to form a continuous mesh.
You cannot project a texture on a component either (not to speak about several ones) so as Remus suggests, you should either explode the component or enter its editing context (this haughty expression meaning double click to edit it) and project directly onto the surface. It needs to be smooth for this however.

Thanks everyone! As a newbie I imagined projecting a texture would be easier if I turned my triangles into a group or component, but when I explode the component and paint my triangle faces individually I get a very nice looking surface.
Thanks again!!

I wish there was a feature to apply textures positioned or at least projected on groups and components. Unfortunately we can only do this on "raw" geometry.
