Sketchup Quits Responding?
-
Super high detail will slow down SU a lot. Any way you can make it with less detail?
Also, check your styles settings. Don't use any fancy styles and turn off profile edges. That will help a little,
Chris

Could you upload the model of the fan grill? it might be that slowing SU down, but it might be something else.
-
Wow, thanks for the quick responses.
At Chris,
well, less detail kinda defeats the purpose! guess i could if i half to. I always use the default styles, & keep profile edges off, it seems to run better that way.At remus,
not sure what you mean? are you aksing if i tried to upload the grill model? or if you want me to upload the grill model? I never tried uploading the the model but i will if needed. -
Yeah, i was asking you to upload it. We might be able to point out some stuff that would help speed up your model, if it is indeed the complexity of it which is slowing things down.
-
I also like to go overboard on the detail sometimes, but there are times when it just isn't a good idea. So its possible that if you have a lot of tubes - like cage bars and fan coverings or something that were made with 24segment circles, you would downgrade those to 6 sided circles. And perhaps the fan blades don't need to be so hi-res. If you were planning on sending the file out to a manufacturer to create them and accuracy was paramount, extra detail is important. BUt if its just to show the sie of the computer case, you should be able to get away with less detail. Even pretty low detail stuff can make fantstic renders, if you are going the rendering route.
But like Remus says, upload the file - lets have a look! I'd like to see it too,

Well, I'm currently trying to upload this fan grill model. Its been uploading for almost an hour now!!! On the "export progress..." pop up window its still writing entities and the red bar is only about 1/4" long. This is going to take awhile if it works at all!!!
-
How big is the model? in megabytes i mean.

12.3 MB (12,909,566 bytes)
I just canceled the upload, and when I did SU stopped responding!! I guess its just the file size and too much detail. Too many little circles
-
I have had models with size of 100-200MB due to large size textures. And I've also got a model of 800K faces. Running XP, Vista, Windows7, none of them have crashed.
So I think it's a different problem. Could be hardware. Have you updated your drivers? -

Which Drivers? they should all be up to date to my knowledge.
-
Thomthom was probably refering to graphics drivers.
As far as i know the warehouse only allows uploads of 10 mb or less, which might explain why yours was taking so long. im not sure what you could have done to make the fan grill alone 12 mb, though. That is enormous for such a component. theres definitely something fishy going on
-
I have not seen the word 'Layers' used once here, you may want to try that first and see if you can hide everything except the mesh you are working on, maybe it will be faster.
-
The graphics drivers are the most likely culprit with SU. But it can also be worth to update your MB drivers as well.
If you found a way to upload your model some where we could test it and verify whether it's a local problem that happens on your computer, or a model problem. -
I have the latest Drivers from ATI for my video card (cat 9.3), not sure about mobo, will have to check asus site to make sure.
I have an older HP computer with XP and an Invidia 8600GT vid card installed, with an Athlon 4200+ dual core processor. I'm going to download SU 7 on it and draw up another grill & see how it acts on that machine, and go from there.
-
I just loaded SU7 onto my HP machine, & drew up another fan grill. The problems seem to be worse on that computer. As soon as I try to extrude to the proper thickness SU stops responding. its been a couple minutes now & its still not responding.
Would it help if i upload the grill with just the layout, not extruded, so you guys can try to extrude or figure out what is going on? Or should I just let it go and assume SU isnt powerful enough to do what I'm trying?

Yes please.
-
For some unknown reason I just cant upload this model, even if its not extruded, tried it on both machines. I did upload a Bulgin power switch that I drew up the other day & uploaded just fine took about 1 minute if that long, so that leads me to believe its the model itself!!
If I ever figure out how to get to upload I will let ya know.
Thanks for the help in trying to figure this out.

Do you know how to use FTP? I can PM you a password to a folder on my FTP if you want to put it there for a few days.

Don't know what "FTP" is, let alone how to use it. Appreciate the offer though.

Upload it here: http://www.rapidshare.com/
then share the download link in thread.
