is there any way that i can make 1 of these faces a component, texture it with a leaf texture then replace the other faces with the textured component?

its funny i didn't even think of the fact that the paint tool will paint all selected faces at the same time. this needs to be added to the duh thread.

the only thing is that if they were induvidual components they would be easier to instance for render and wouldn't the SU file be smaller?

thanks, a very informative thread. i wonder if someones done this with groups and if the results would be similiar.

Internally, groups are the same as components. For instance, when you iterate over Sketchup.active_model.definitions it returns Components, Groups and Images. In order to tell them them apart you have to test with definition.group? or definition.image?. So I would think that groups would be very similar if not identical.

As for your original question. I would be possible to replace faces with components. That would actually be quite a neat plugin.
