Thickening lines & displaying scale

Hello,
I am so happy this site is here
I'm ok with the basic functions of SU, and these might be silly questions, but i can't find the answers anywhere.....I am trying to display my model as a cross-section, and the building lines need to be thicker than the rest of the lines...how do i do this?
Also, how can i display the scale for the drawing (like how a scale is standard on most architectural drawings) in the corner of the page?thanks so much!!!

Hi Carissa, welcome aboard!
Unfortunately there are no line weights in SU (except for "Profiles" but you cannot control it). All that you can control is under Window > Styles where you can find the Edge settings under the Edit tab.
Also, there is no scaled model in SU (well,you can model a model scaled) but you are supposed to scale everything 1:1 and eventually only print to scale. You can however use Screen text to show what scale you have printed your model but normally some 2D presentational tool like LayOut for SU Pro are to be use for such annotations.

I see you have SU 6. It came with LayOut Beta and now as SU 7 came out, there is LO 2 which is much-much better on one hand and there is a vector based rendering option of it as well as an "explode" function after which you can add any kind of line weight, style, colour whatnot to your 2D drawing.
Note that it's a "partner" of SU Pro only.

You can, in SU, control the thickness of the section cut lines with styles (as well as the color of the section lines) independent of profile lines. You can also insert a graphic scale (in the symbols folder of the bonus components). So you do not have to resort to LO.

i just installed version 7 of the free SU (i had v6)and i ordered the pro version (am waiting on academic verification for the student price!) I noticed that the components are different in V7. First, what happened to all of the standard components that were in previous versions? It looks like i have to be connected to the internet access any components...is that the case? Second, where are bonus components located that pmiller mentioned?

That's true, Paul, however those section lines will be of the same thickness allover the model and not only on the outline of the building.
As for components and materials, you can simply copy the content of the respective folders from 6 to 7. The same should be valid for the plugins but nobody ever knows so the best is to copy them one by one and keep restarting SU to see if there is some problem.

http://sketchup.google.com/download/bonuspacks6.htmlPS. another trick for nice display of section cuts: Make sure you are careful to orient faces so all the back faces are inside items with thickness (i.e. walls, floor slabs, etc.), then use styles to set the backface color to black in a separate scene. Result is instant section cuts that are pure black for full thickness.

thanks so much!!!I take this to mean any part of the building that is cut in the section, and you can control section line thickness under styles / edit in the fifth tab (solid purple cube"modeling settings"), section cut width. However if you are cutting through cabinets etc. and do not wish these to as thick, you're out of luck.
