Just before my wife closed my browser I had found a fantastic deck building tutorial.

What I am interested in most is how to copy and array out posts, joists and balusters.

In this lost tutorial it illustrated how to draw 5 posts spaced evenly across a certain distance, how to draw one joist and have it array out 16"/24" on center and how to array out balusters on 4"/6" centers between two posts.

As you can imagine doing this manually takes me allot of time.

Can any of you point me in a direction of a tutorial that might help me learn how to perform these functions in SU? I am a dock builder, any other tutorials that may prove useful to my trade are welcome too.

    Thank you in advance.

    Casey

      Hi Casey,

It is called linear array and you can find its description somewhere half way down the page.

You do it with the Move tool combined with the Ctrl button (to make copies)

There is also a radial array done with the Rotate tool and Ctrl (again, somewhere half wy down the page).

More complex paths than lines and circles can be achieved by plugins.

Casey, those might have been my humble offerings I made about three years ago. Glad I kept them!

Joe ... that is exactly the tutorial I found last weekend.

Thank you for the link and thank you for taking the time to put the tutorial together.

          You've made my day.

You can also place the end balusters on the edge of the posts. Make an array and then remove the end balusters. Then the spacing to the post is equal to all the others.

So glad I could help guys!

OK, here's another I did around the same time, showing how I usually draw my curved decks, like this one. http://woodsshop.com/Curved_Deck.htm

PB, that's how I figure out baluster spacing too.

On page 19 of this Tut, #29, after you select all the balusters you could make them all a Component.

Yow! that curved deck link is worth a look folks. Masterful work. It looks like the deck is more value than the house. I do worry the pine is too close, though. I designed a curvy deck for some folks, but I don't think it ever was built. You could've handled it, no problem. Thanks for the instructions.
