if i understand correctly, you just need to select everything->right click->intersect with selected and then clean up the model.

        Hi Mike (and welcome, BTW).

I think if you triple clicked on your model (the one that is closer to the origin) and then > Right click > Intersect > ... selected, it would simply create those intersection lines.

Then you can simply erase the excessive (unwanted) geometry. Note however that you are displaying all back faces so after this, select all again > right clkick > Reverse faces to end up with properly oriented (white) faces all outside.

Well when I try to do that, I can't get the second hole to appear, or in the case of the second box, the hole doesn't appear, and the cube turns hollow underneath.

          File shows my two cubes.

          Thanks again.

The first box works just fine. In the second box, there are already some faces missing for me. How did you get to that solution?

Well the first box doesn't work fine, but I found how to get that one to work right. Once I cleaned it up, I click on the face that is still there and then click Hide and now I can see through it. I'll play with the other one over the weekend and see if I can get it working. Thanks.

No, hiding is not THE solution. You will need to erase it.

Thank you so much Jean, that worked great and with nice illustrations. I was so close to doing it that way, but not close enough. I was using the eraser, instead of right click - erase, so it wouldn't remove the face for me.

Note that the Eraser tool only works on lines, not faces.

And with that I could finish my first major attempt with sketchup, I present to you, a camera base.
