Wall thickness details - Question

Hey,
Just wondering if there was anyway of adding details to your wall thickness in a section in LO.
Such as adding insulation, platerboard, wall joists etc. Without having to model all of the details in SU. Because it would be much faster to just sketch on the details on the sectioned wall in LO if it is the correct overall thickness. With the correct insulation squiggly line etc etc..
Can anyone help with this please? It would cut down my work a lot hehe.

Unfortunatly this remains still unadressed...
Obviously you can explode the Layout 2d viewport and draw whatever you want with Layout tools, but that, according to me, is against the sw's target, because obviously after that your viewport wont update anymore.
Is necessary to provide Sketchup with an appropriate 2d CAD extension pack (with vectorial hatches, lineweights and linestyles, and so on...) to apply directly on the sketchup model.

The approach of cutting section through model and then manually drawing detail elements is the workflow we use in Revit. It has the same update issue, but seems to be the best way to do it for now.

You could always create a surface at the section cut and use raster image with the pattern you want.

Ok but what about linestyles and lineweights?
Sketchup haven't yet such controls within the main program. So you necessary have to do all that stuff in Layout. Because a drawing usually requires a couple of different lineweights and hatches. And the only way to do that is exploding the viewport, and again the problem is still there.

This sounds similar to the situation I use in my 2d CAD sections (without benefit of full modeling as in Revit). The sections I draw are based on the finish outline (like a SU section would be). However I save a lot of time by NOT drawing the details of the section. All detail work is done in specific detail sections of eaves, base of wall, etc. Primary beams and other special constructions are shown in the building section--which calls attention to their location.

The point is that for most building types, the builders do not need to see all the plates, insulation etc. They would not be building if they did not understand the general assemblies and the detail drawings. In fact there is a chance of presenting an incomplete overall section in the end (think of all the things the engineer will add by the end of design), which no one will study anyway, at the small scale usually presented. Rather, a section with complete assembly specifications, standard notes (blocking requirements etc.), and detail call-outs on the section sheets , along with the large scale details (often "built" from your library of existing details), is more effective than trying to draw every stick in the building.

This saves me time and errors (remember the "Draw once, reference often." dictum). I only intend to save others "from diarrhea of the pencil", as my first boss would say.

Hi all, i am a newby to LayOut, everythings going ok so far.
Although my biggest problem would have to be line weights and lines not appearing
clearly!

As someone has mentioned before, with a technical drawing there are
a few different line weights needed. How do i do that? Is it even possible?

I know its possible to apply a line weight to a drawing in LayOut, but it applies
to the whole drawing. How do i apply different line weights to one technical drawing?

Also when i drew a cylinder (pole), some of the lines in elevation would dissapear like it does in sketch up.
How would i fix that if i wanted to a technical drawing.
Help!

Hi Rogue and welcome!

The style (weight, colour etc.) of very single line can be changed in your LO documents from the Shape styles dialog (you will need to preselect what you want to change).

Also the styles of the SU drawing can be altered once you explode your model in vector or hybrid rendering mode but be aware that this will ultimately break the connection with the original SU model (practically it will make a 2D "snapshot" of what you can see in the SU model window).

As for your cylinder, I am not sure what's happening there although have a clue; in SU, go to your style dialog > in model > edit > edge settings and set profiles to 1 pixel (so that curved profiles will also have an outline but not thicker than a "normal" edge).
