I am interested in RC aircraft design and would like to try and use sketchup for that purpose. I want to create a 3D wing shape that has sweep and taper but need some assistance in learning how to achieve this with SU.

I am a newbie and am attaching the file I've started with for practice. When viewing the wing from all angles, SU has created unequal surfaces along "rectangular" lines rather than the sweep edges as I would like.

To be honest SU probably isnt very good for this sort of thing. Youd be better of with something like MoI: http://moi3d.com/

With a bit of practice youll be able to get far more control over the surfaces.

Sorry, but I think you're all making this too complicated.

Yup....that is another way to do it. Options are good. That's what's great about this forum. Everyone can offer different ideas and ways to do something and then you just pick what works. All good. Let's see more...
              Cheers, Jeff

                rshafersr,

For the example you attached you might want to try this:

                **1. Create the airfoil profile.

                1. Pull that profile out (using the push/pull tool) to your desired length.

                2. Click on the end of the wing and scale from the center node at the trailing edge and push that forward to attain the desired taper.

                3. Then, scale from a midpoint node while holding down the control key to reduce the thickness of the profile.**

The same would be true with a tapered leading edge or both. For both just scale the tip while holding down ctl + shift.

                There, clear as mud.

Thank you all for the examples!! I shall work with them and make sure I understand and can manipulate all phases of each. I shall post my efforts when I get proficient working with them!!
