3D warehouse question
-
When you look at a model in the 3D warehouse it shows you how many views and downloads there has been in the last 7 days.
Is that really accurate or is it an accumulation number since the model was uploaded?
The reason I ask is that my most populat model has supposedly had 256 views and 98 downloads in a week! My models are ok but I don't promote or advertise them anywhere so the only source of views would be this forum or warehouse searches.
-
When it started, one of my models had more downloads than views.
How come? Then what we figured out was that there are localized (foreign language) WH sites as well but the downloads go from the same file.
So you never know.

Hey Hazza and Gaieus,
The number of views and downloads is indeed for just the previous 7 days, and they exclude duplicate downloads from the same user in each day. The reason the views can sometimes be lower than the downloads is that views are for the Model Details pages, but often people just download directly from the link under the model in the search results.

Ah, that also explains it, thanks, Peter! (And now as if I also remembered this piece of info).

Is there a way can I tell where these views are coming from? I just got another 100 hits in just over 6 hours, that's 1 every 4 minutes or so. Where are these people coming from? There had only been 30 views of this thread at the time so it can't have come from here!
I am flattered but curious where these views are coming from.

It's 100% me. I like to view models on the warehouse for fun. I'm a speed viewer.

Hi Hazza,
Short answer is no, you can't see who they are, they're anonymized. But they are not all Chris. If he comes back 100 times a day, it still counts as just 1. Sorry Chris!

You just freed my of my sped viewing addiction knowing it was all for naught!
Makes sense though, you want unique views counted, not bozos like me. Still, insteresting the count is so high. Did you use any TAGS that might be searched often? "building" "house" "plant" "model"? Maybe lots of people are just stumbling aross them.

C'mon, guys, Hazza is building a very carefully organised and QA'd collection! See here:

About the only tag I use is "woodwork". I am not an attention whore, it was only out of curiosity that I asked the original question. I don't ask for people to rate the model, I don't have a web site that I point everyone to my models etc.
About the only promotion of my models I do is the signature on this forum and if the web site that I get the woodwork plans from allows comments I just let them know that I created a sketchup model of their plan.
I enjoy using SU for the sake of using it and to keep me occupied in a job that can be quite tedious and boring without something to do. If other like and want to use my models then that's great but it's not the goal. I was just taken by surprise that I do have so many views and downloads that's why I asked if it was 7 days or a total from upload.

No worries, Hazza! That's a nice collection and I guess avlot of people visits it even from here (note that there are generally a lot of "Guests" visiting the forums).

My most "popular model" is a model I made a while back; a low-poly large beanbag chair, that I don't even think I did a very good job on : with around 400 views and 330 downloads a week. 8 people have added it in their collections, and it has 55 ratings. HOW!??! it has to be my least detailed model, easiest model(done in like 10 minutes), and doesn't even have that many tags!
model found here: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=de862f78d1412e5268d4f5a3519f61be
My second most "popular model" is a photo-textured version of someone else's posable version of someone else's colored version of someone else's extract of master chief from halo 3: with around 430 views and 250 downloads a week.
model found here: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=ec26ff8e5bcd25a25dfd2d7998768282
after those two models, the download rate plummets to 70, the 50, then 30, etc. I REALY don't get why certaion models are so popular
