Perforated tube
-
Hi. I am rather new in using SU, and having some problems with filesize when perforating a pipe/tube.
I have done the cutting as it is described in tut, (explode, trim and regroup) and made one section of the pipe containing 38 holes. The problem comes when I copy this group multiple times, and make a perforated pipe/tube. The filesize becomes huge.
Have tried a few times to redo the whole process with explode, trim and regroup, with bigger sections of the pipe, but I get same result.
Is there a way to perforate a plate, and then fold it into a pipe? -
If you select the section with the holes then right click->make component. You can then copy this component multiple times and SU will recognise that they are all the same, and so hopfully reduce the file size.
The other thing you could do is to cut down on the number of segments you use in your circle. To do this just select the circle tool , and then before you draw anything, type in the number of segments you want in your circle and hit enter. 12 would be a good start if you dont want too much detail. 24 is the default, and a good number for an average amount of detail.

You could even make those perforations (holes) be instances of a component that cuts a whole and this way just have one of this components adding up to file size as well as getting rid of the holes (and its geometry) totally (SU does not actually "cut" that hole).

It works ok with the make component, but then i get the lines between each component. But this atleast does not do anything with the filesize. thanks
I used 38 segments on the circle, that way i could draw each "hole" on the surface of the segment. Maybe that was a difficult way, but was the sollution i found. But come to think of it, I used 38 segments on the "holes" too
.
Thanks for the inputs, and I will try what you say to Gaieus.

to get rid of the lines between the components, just hide the lines in the component (select the lines->right click->hide.)
In terms of changing the number of segments, having 38 segments for the main tube was a very sensible idea
