Fast select with eraser
-
Is there a way to select such as using the eraser which is so fast and useful? Sorry if it was answer already somewhere that i couldn't find.
-
Yep, if you hold down the eraser (so it selects everything) then, without letting go of the left mouse button, hit the right mouse button. You can now let go of everything and then do a single left click in the drawing area. This will leave you with all the stuff you 'deleted' selected.

or you switch to the wireframe mode, where you can select only edges...
but if you want to select edges AND faces - no idea how to do that.
now that I come to think of it: wouldn't it be nice to have ha toggle command for "normal select mode" and "only select visible polygons"? meaning that if you are in "only"-mode and draw a selection rectangle, only the polygons that are visible from your current point of view are selected; polygons that are hidden behind other geometry are not selected.
or even better than a toggle button would be a manipulator key (unfortunately Alt, Shift and Ctrl are already used up for the select tool) -
For the specific request there is also the selecto.rb script that makes life easier.
I couldn't get a link for it so I just attached it@remus: this may leave the selection but it will still remain in "eraser-tool-mode" if you switch to another tool then the selection is gone,... (at least for me)

Not for me though.

Doesn't work for me. When I get to that right-click part, the selection is lost. Left-clicking doesn't bring it back. Could this have something to do with the 'click style' preference setting (in the Preferences panel in my Windows version of SU)? My preference settings have click style as 'auto detect' & 'continue line drawing. Remus are your preferences set differently?

an even easier way is to hit the shortcut key for the selection tool after you have selected all the desired edges with the eraser tool.
simply hit the space bar and your selection stays active. now you can choose any other tool and do what ever you like with your selection
(I find this way easier than pressing right mouse button while still keeping the left down) -
Yeah, this does not work for me either Ross and I have the same settings as you.

Jakob's tip about using a shortcut key to switch over from the eraser tool to the 'select' tool works for me. The selection remains.

That is the way it works for me Ross (& Jakob).
Thanks. -
Remus' trick ought to work...but you need to make sure that the eraser is actually over a line when you r-click. If it's over a face or off the model entirely, you tend to lose the selection. You ought to get the r-click context menu pop up. Just ignore it and either left click in empty space, as remus suggests or go for the Select tool on the toolbar....but it is much easier simply to hit the Space bar

Thanks for all the responses. Jakob's eraser and space key works perfectly! Thanks so much for the great tip!
Even better if we can have bigger eraser for bigger area selection in future.
