Alright, I'm guessing this is a problem with my computer and not with SketchUp. I'm hoping that someone has an idea for a fix.

The new computer at home has XP Pro, 4GB RAM, an AMD dual core processor, yada, yada, yada.

New install of SU6 Pro--freshly downloaded from the mother ship.

When I close SketchUp, SketchUp.exe still shows in the Processes under the Task Manaer. There'll be an entry for every time I've opened SketchUp since start up. Of course when I am ready to shut the computer down I have to either wait for all those to close or I have to go in and lose them manually.

So, my question is, how do I make the process quit when I close SketchUp?

I rememeber there was something similar to this related to Online Help but that got fixed and besides, I can't recall the last time I looked at the Online Help. Certainly I haven't from the new computer.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks.

        Hi Dave,

I remember you reporting this elsewhere already πŸ˜‰
...but I could not recreate it with either version so did not reply.

Is this the "same" bug you experience? If so, it should really be your system I think.

        Gai...

Yes, it's the same problem, Gai. I didn't get any response in the other place so I thought I'd try to cast a wider net. I realize it probably has to do with Windows on that machine instead of with SketchUp since I don't have problems on the two other computers that also have SU6Pro installed. On the other hand, I don't have the problem with any other programs on that machine either.

            Dave,

Perhaps it's a problem with Internet Explorer security settings...?

            http://groups.google.com/group/sketchupissues/msg/2c809edf75a68ad1

This is a fairly old message, but I haven't found any other discussions that have been this specific. Perhaps Craig can provide an update.

            Regards,
            Taff

Thanks, Taff. I'll give it a try. Craig seems to be referring to the old problem with the Help files but, with luck, it'll take care of my problem too.

I have been having this same type of issue on at least 2 of my machines (both running WinXP Home). Only for my situation, it's not just SU that leaves an orphaned process, it's happened for Firefox, and at least 2 other applications. Seems like it only started happening about 4-8 weeks ago.

I've tried to research a possible cause, but haven't found much. I thought it might have something to do with WinXP SP 3 or some other recent Windows update that was installed. I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else has seen and/or solved this issue.

Taff, thank you. That seems not to havetaken care of it. Looks like I'm still searching. Funny thing though, I don't recall ever having changed any security settings on this machine in the first place. The computer's only a month old. I'm getting old but I'd think I could remember something like that. I'd have thought that IE would have been using the default settings anyway.

By the way, I heard some nice things from a friend about you and a Windsor chair model you made. Good work.

                      Dave,

Even if it's not IE security settings, it could still be XP security settings. If I recall correctly, most of the XP SP3 changes involved system security.

You might want to check whether it's the shortcut from which you're running SketchUp. Instead, try going to the SketchUp folder, and running the 'SketchUp.exe' file, without using a shortcut, at all. See if you have the same process-termination problem.

I'm just guessing, here, but it's worth a test...
