I think it would be handy to be able to arrange your components and groups either alphabetically as it is now or non-alphabetically. Maybe even have folders you could group your components in within the outliner for better organization.

Wouldnt folders be essentialy like grouping a collection of groups?

Not really, I would not want to group the components, just have them listed in a folder within the outliner.

I see what your saying, but having folders in the outliner would essentialy look the same as grouping things (except of course that the geometry is grouped in the model, although if your working from the outliner i dont think its a particularly relevant point.)

Basically it seems to me like near identical functionality to what already exists, except with a minor modification.

I agree with remus - can't really see the benefit of introducing a method of grouping that is restricted to the outliner.

but maybe I simply don't understand your idea and the use of it. could you give an example as how these folders would make difference?

what I would love to see is a similar structure as we have it in the outliner for the component window; some form of hiding nested components- so that I find the door in my component window. only if I press the little plus button in te corner of the door-thumbnail, the components for hinges, handles... are expanded (otherwise they, stay hidden).

here I would understand a folder structure (have one folder for "building-components", one for "people/cars/vegetation", one for "furniture"...)

Well my original thinking was along the lines of layer sets in Photoshop. However the more I think of it, and by your replies, I am not so sure folders would help at all. The layer sets act more like components, but that is not what I was looking for. I don't really have a good solution and maybe there is none.

Don't get me wrong, the outliner is fantastic but there are times when I am working on a model that has quite a few groups and components and working with it gets a bit frustrating - scrolling through such a long list (even if I have it all collapsed). Although, 95% of the work I do with SU, this is not a problem.

I was just thinking that there might be a better way of organizing it.

I absolutely agree with you, Boofredlay.

with a big model the outliner can be crammed with objects. perhaps we find a good solution for organising the structure. I will definitely think about it.
