I've been having a mess around with the subdivide and smooth plugin and although I still have no idea how it works, I've come up with a bit of a snake-like shape. I added it to a scene with some stainless steel balls and even though I painted the snake with the same material as the balls and assigned 100% reflectivity to it, it has rendered a different colour. Is there a certain way of assigning colours to an object made with S&S?

There isnt any particular method for applying materials to subd surfaces, it should just be the same as normal.

I don't think it has rendered a different colour on the balls as it has on the snake. Both the snake and the balls are a mirror-like finish, but because the balls are much greater in size it appears differently to the much smaller snake shape.

The width of the snake isn't too dissimilar to the size of the very small balls and they appear the same as the large ones so why not the snake?

I'll scale the snake up and see if it makes any difference to the finish.

Hmm.. well I scaled the snake up until only a small portion of it showed and it does appear to look like steel. But I still don't understand why it wouldn't take on the appearance of steel when its smaller.

                  Strange indeed.
I would have sworn you assigned a lighter grey color to the snake (or reversed faces).
Podium, as you know, performs best for metals using a very dark grey or black surface with maximum reflection.

I can't grasp what happened here...

Well this is interesting, I scaled the snake back down and rendered it again and it now has the same material as all the balls. Altho there us still a section of the snake which looks a different colour altogether.

                    Head scratching indeed.

It gets even more strange now 😄.
Are you sure you didn't correct it accidentally by reversing faces (or assigning black to both front as back faces) somewhere in the process?

Ah, well I think I may have reversed the faces, applied the material to that side too then reversed them back again. That could very possibly be the explanation, Biebel.
