      Hello fellow SU addicts,

I am designing a new train station in Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands.
The current building was constructed in the 70's, here's a picture.

      http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/5813/97319432ie6.jpg

A lot of times when I make a model I'm not happy with the progress and start over again. 😢
The building should be about 85m in width, 15m length. Here's the models I've designed so far. There WIPs so a lot of walls and textures need to be added.

Which one of these models has potential? Could you guys give me some feedback?

      Thnx, Ward

Ward, they all have potential this early in the game, but my initial impression is the first one is kinda boring compared to the other two. I think the second one reminds me more of a train station (based on historical models) than the other two.

Why not restore/renovate teh existing station, rather than build a new one?

          My avatar is an anachronism.

Is the current building definately being demolished? the reason why i ask is because i kinda like the shape with the cantilevers and the balconies. i also think it works nicely because of the asymmetry of it, which is why i think each design would be better if each side respectively responded to the site/conditions of the site, i like your idea of having a complete transparency through the station because it means people can clearly see when trains are there but is there a way this can be used celeverly rather than glazing the entire facade?

kinda open ended comments but hopefully a couple of things of use

              good luck!

I actually like the old train station as well. The linear elements work well to the notion of a train's movement. Maybe that's something you could investigate, adding more horizontal elements that could create some idea of movement into the design.

Of the 3 i prefer the last one, although i think a slightly less conspicuos use of materials would be in order. The glass roof is a it over the top for me.

First shot and second shot are unfinished, only partially seen.
                      Third shot is complete.

That´s why I guess is the one you like best.
But you are uncertain because it crashes a bit with the old building.

I think the first try suits best.
You create a mesurate wide open space for the entrance in a closed contundent building.
                      I like it.
It express the concept of the building. A train stop.

i think even if the program of needs have to adapt to it i think.

                      ,))),

I think there are plans to renovate / demolish the train station. The main waiting hall and the first floor are abandoned.
Bergen op Zoom is a 700-year old city, very nice historic buildings. The train station really doesn't fit in.

I'll have to make some photographs of the current situation so you guys can take a look. I'll try to map the area as well.

                          @ kwistenbiebel
This is my first building I'm going to design which has to be placed in an real life surrounding.
I think a modern style would contrast nicely with the historic surroundings. I'm currently reading "Architecture for Dummies" , so hopefully I'm gonna learn to think like an architect a litte bit.

                          @remus
The last one is my favorite as well, its got way to many glass surfaces I agree with you. Its a WIP so I'm not done with it.

                          @ all
Thanks for the comments and feedback! Got a lot of work to do, I'll keep you guys posted

Eduardo, I have to ask how you got the commission? Designing a new train station would be a dream commission for many architects, yet you've been appointed with your "Architecture for Dummies book"! 😄

Eduardo, as architects do, start with a concept that derives from parameters in the surroundings.

The volumes you show us are just form and it doesn't anything about that particular site.
In other words: it does not communicate.
Not that pure form exploration can't be fun as a play, but to design for a specific location asks for a lot more depth...

(I only say this as you explicitely ask for feedback on design.)

What happened to the original station?

I'd like to post some images from the surrounding area.
What resolution can I post here? 800 x 600 is to large right?

Ah! You're an enthusiast like me! Well ... might be a good idea to stock up on architecture books. If you want to keep it cheap (as you Dutchies generally do 😄 ), De Slegte is a good place to start. Drop by there from time to time. They have a tendency of offering pretty decent stuff at extremely low prices.

                                        Got an update.
This is what the train station looked like in the good old days.

                                        http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/3310/afb9ma4.jpg

Than it got replaced in the 70's by this:

                                        And some images from LiveEarth:
This is the Stationsstraat, the street that leads to the train station and the main square.
Beautifull street with historic buildings, mostly lawyers and real estate brokers.

I'd like to have a glass rood so the whole building has a light interior.
