Can no longer select...anything?
-
Hi all,
I would consider myself decent/above average working with sketchup and have used it for about 12 months, however when exporting a rather large model to *.3ds yesterday sketchup froze/displayed an error. I didn't pay much attention, and just went on to do other work.
.... However when I went to use sketchup again today, I have found I can no longer select anything once created. Absolutely everything 'apears' to be fine and working correctly, however once I create faces/lines I cannot select them in the scene at all??Hence modelling becomes extremely time consuming and difficult
Have tried reinstalling, is there anyway to just reset sketchup? or an way to solve this problem?

did you have changed anything to your graphics subsystem, i.e. new video driver etc. ?
try if effect vanishes if options "fast feedback" and/or "hardware acceleration" are disabled in the SU OepnGL settings.

that would be my first guess too.
didnt see face selections or inferring-points the other day on my old laptop.when I turned hardware acceleration off, it worked again...

means: bad OpenGL support of used video driver which is - under Windoze - regularly the case w/ ATI Radeon gaming cards.
check website of GPU (or Notebook) maker for recent drivers of used card... or better switch to a CAx video card w/ mature OGL support as e.g. the nVidia Quadro FX series.

will buy an entirely new laptop (as soon as I get my payraise )
my current laptop is more than five years old, you know - it just can't keep up with SketchUp anymore...

do not hesitate to check the DELL Precision series w/ Quadro FX mobile GPUs too.
would currently prefer a higher clocked dual core against a lower clocked quad core, maybe cheaper too...
have fun,

thanks, I will definitely have a look at it. do you know if dell laptops are cheaper, if you order them in Germany (rather than UK?) I consider getting a german one anyway - otherwise I am stuck with an english keyboard (without ae, oe, ue...)

dunno UK prices, just check by yourself: DELL Germany

About the original problem: If you are using a Mac, you could try deleting the SU preferences file (plist file). A corrupt plist file is often the cause of export errors.

i was about to reply "no" to the question about the new video driver.... but now that I think back, I did update it.
changed the openGL settings and problem is now fixed ....thanks for that
... one more question though, what affect is turning off "Use Harware Acceleration" going to cause me?

3D screen output is not calculated by the GPU of the video card but has to be emulated in software by the already occupied CPU... which leads to a significant speed decrease especially with larger models, i.e. no "realtime" rotating etc.
hth,
Norbert
