Nice work Tom,
Here is me at Stonehenge.
What elevations do You need ?I've had to guess at the hight of the Trilithons (the innner horseshoe) stones. I have the tallest one and the outer circle.

I suppose with rendering, the conditions at the Solstices and equinoxes can be duplicated.

Dear Tom,
Have you thought about writing to English Heritage to request survey material. Perhaps the place to start would be the Director/Manager of the Stonehenge site itself. He/she would/should be able to point you in the right direction.
If you were to explain what you are doing, and that the final model could appear on Google Earth, then I'm sure that they would be pleased to help. It is publicity for them and perhaps they would endorse the accuracy of your model when posted on GE.
I have often heard it said, "If you don't ask you don't get". In my experience, the worst that that approach has brought me has been a slap on the face.
Kind regards,
Bob -
Fantastic work Tom. I have not read all the posts but will this evening
as Stonehenge has intrigued me for many years. As a matter of interest,
I saw on TV last, the Geographic Channel that there is to be a program
on Stonehenge this coming Sunday at 8.00pm GMT (I think!). Its called
Stonehenge Code or something like that, should be interestingMike
-
I did a little checking! Here are a couple of links on Stonehenge.
The first is the National Geographic Channel which show quite a few
interesting links relating to Stonehenge and the second is about the
program that I mentioned, Stonehenge Decoded.http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/episode/stonehenge-decoded-3372/Overview#tab-Videos/05392_00

PS: Watch the video in the second link, very funny

Heres my first WIP, still lots to do on the textures and scene in general. Gotta love HDR though
-
looking good so far Remus, only thing i see instantly is a missing texture on one surface.
care to share the model so I can give it a go with Vue?
-
attempt 2:
need to get soem shadows going, and need to sort that rgass ut as well. it'll have to wait untill tommorow though, as SU is currently crashing every time i export the model.
-
I would love to get my hands on this model !
Would it be too much to ask to share it? -
remus, this last render looks very good! i must say i don't like the sky too much, but the stones are amazing!
-
Remus,
That looks great. Kim Fredrik is also working on a render of the stones. It will be interesting to see what everybody comes up with. There are lots of dramatic photos on various web sites particularly sunrise and sunset that might provide inspiration.
I think I'll upload the model to 3DW and post a link here so anyone can get at it.

remus: have you taken some of solo's modeling prowess? when i saw that render, i hade to serriously ask myself "is that a photo, or a render?".
the only thing i can find that separates it from realism is the grass. though i really shouln't be talking, since i cant make grass yet (i know you use clip maps, but thats the extent of my knowlage)
well, when i looked at solo's "terrain" topic, i thought i had seen my "Oh My God that is the most insane thing i have ever seen" model of the day, but this just topped it (sorry solo). -
OK, The SU model is on 3DW at:

I'm looking forward to some more cool pics. I'll have too start an album!

I really havent done much...i just added an HDR background and swapped some textures around. Its mostly down to Toms bril modelling
Julius, new sky coming right up
Igor, the grass was just a spur of the moment addition when i remebred kwist's trick using the photoshop brushes, i'm going to try and improve it for the next one.
-
This is pretty OT, but i thought it looked pretty wicked:
-
Here is some grass I made using Kwist's grass component. If your renderer supports alpha mask as clipmap (like Kerkythea does), you are ready to use it. If not, creating an clipmap from the alpha mask is just a minute.
Works in SU as well with the transparent png.
-
I've tweaked a lot of the textures to get a smoother finish on the stones and put the model on 3DW at
