I have just received a site model from an Architects that I wish to add my model to.
The model I received is all color by layer.
My model is color by material.

If I import my model into their site model then it defaults to the color by layer mode. Is there a way of keeping their model as it is but keeping my imported model/component with its original materials?
I have not come across this before, I always work color by mats.

If I cannot then it means a lot more work!

There is no way you can mix these two "styles" (or rather display modes). I would say that turning off all layers and on only one at a time - repainting the parts of the model - could work but most probably those parts are all grouped/components so it would be harder than I first thought.

That is what I thought Csaba, but I was hoping that I was wrong!

I think Didier Bur has made a script that can convert a model between the colour by object and colour by layer modes.

              Yep.... it is called layers_materials.rb - http://www.crai.archi.fr/RubyLibraryDepot/Ruby/en_ren_page.htm
...... although it will pick random colors to be applied to the layered geometry. If one wanted to match the colors that are in the layer system, one will have to do it manually.

It is a nice script and could be the solution for you.
