I really dislike the thick dark lines when profiles are on. I was hoping I could set SU to start the blank sheet with profiles switched off. However, It seems I can't get it to work. I opened the template file, switched off profiles, then saved the file. But on the next start up profiles is again checked. Any suggestions?

        Hi CalypsoArt, hi folks.

Did you save the file in the Templates directory, overwriting the previous one ?

Or, if you saved it with a new name to preserve the original template, did you point SU to use it as its default template ?

        Just ideas.

Be sure templates are saved to the following path on a PC:
          C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 6\Resources\en-US\Templates

There is a path on the PC (C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 6\Templates)that is also named templates, I don't know if SU still uses it so I save my templates to both directories, just to be sure.

You need resources/X/templates for to saving a new template.

              profiles is a style setting.
You need to turn off profiles. You can't update the default style so you will need to create a new style. Make the new style with the profiles off your active style. Now save the template and make that the active template.

Sketchup no longer uses the old templates folder and new installs of SketchUP don't eve have it there anymore. You need only to use the one within the Resources/en-Us ( or your language) / Templates

You consider that a work around? I call it standard for almost any program. It's just the way that program operates and should operate. I just figured out how SU did it, cobbled together how from various posts and experiments. I then posted a step by step guide instead of just saying, change it in your template.

An example of a work around is, you reboot the computer after printing an Excel spreadsheet that you print on a single page. The program and computer should be able to handle that task with no problem what so ever. Sure a reboot fixes it but you should not have to.

One thing to consider when creating your own template is that just deleting Bryce or the the framing square from the drawing window doesn't get rid of it. It's still part of the file and in the In Model Components Library. To get rid of it, you need to Purge Unused components and materials.

IMHO, Precision should be increased from the default settings and Length Snapping disabled for a woodworkers template.

Hazza, you are only really part way there.
Because you didn't create a new style to take into account the changes or update the global style and save thet to the template, every single time you use the template when you are adding scenes you are going to get a dialogue that asks you if you want to update the style of the scene, create a new one or do nothing. Even if you update the style, it will only stay updated within your current model. Next time you use the same template and add a scene it will ask you again. If you don't get the "update scene" concept under your belt, you may be very confused as to what change it could be referring to when it asks you if you want to update the style and save it to the scene tab, or to create a new style altogether.

No, you get the ruler instead of Bryce if you use a Template like "Inches (Woodworking)-3D".

Now I am confused because I just added several scenes and not once did it ask about updating the style of the scene. Does that dialogue box have a "Don't show me again" tick box because I probably did that.

Wooo hoooo I figured out how to create your own custom template without Bruce or that stupid ruler and to have profiles turned off. Heres how:

                                    1. Open a new file.
                                    2. Delete the ruler/Bruce.
                                    3. Turn off the profile.
                                    4. Change any other settings.
                                    5. Purge the unused ruler/Bryce.
                                    6. Purge the unused materials.
                                    7. Go "File -> Save as"
                                    8. Browse to your Template directory, by default it is "C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 6\Resources\en-US\Templates"
                                    9. Give it a custom name, mine is "8th inch no profile"
                                    10. Go to "Windows -> Preferences"
                                    11. On the left select "Templates"
                                    12. From the drop down, select your new template.

[Edited: The purge steps were after the post by Dave R]

Hazza, I looked at your template and the embeded style. The style was clearly updated with your changes at some point. If it had not been it would be clearly seen because the stye Icon would have had those arrows in a circle chasing one another. They weren't there so you did update and that is why you aren't getting the message.

Here is an example of a template saved without updating the style. Take a look at how the style icon looks in the style browser and also try to add a scene.

Anyway, you clearly did the deed, just forgot to mention it as a step.
