There is a woodworker kind of template (inches > decimal) which comes with a ruler instead of Bryce.

One thing to consider when creating your own template is that just deleting Bryce or the the framing square from the drawing window doesn't get rid of it. It's still part of the file and in the In Model Components Library. To get rid of it, you need to Purge Unused components and materials.

IMHO, Precision should be increased from the default settings and Length Snapping disabled for a woodworkers template.

Hazza, you are only really part way there.
Because you didn't create a new style to take into account the changes or update the global style and save thet to the template, every single time you use the template when you are adding scenes you are going to get a dialogue that asks you if you want to update the style of the scene, create a new one or do nothing. Even if you update the style, it will only stay updated within your current model. Next time you use the same template and add a scene it will ask you again. If you don't get the "update scene" concept under your belt, you may be very confused as to what change it could be referring to when it asks you if you want to update the style and save it to the scene tab, or to create a new style altogether.

I'm missing something. What stupid ruler? I've certainly know Bryce from the default template but am puzzled by talk of a ruler. Is it a feature of the free version of SU?

No, you get the ruler instead of Bryce if you use a Template like "Inches (Woodworking)-3D".

Oh yeah, forgot that, I will add it in as a step.

Now I am confused because I just added several scenes and not once did it ask about updating the style of the scene. Does that dialogue box have a "Don't show me again" tick box because I probably did that.

nope. Maybe you did update the style but didn't mention it as a step>
Can I see your template file?

Wooo hoooo I figured out how to create your own custom template without Bruce or that stupid ruler and to have profiles turned off. Heres how:

                1. Open a new file.
                2. Delete the ruler/Bruce.
                3. Turn off the profile.
                4. Change any other settings.
                5. Purge the unused ruler/Bryce.
                6. Purge the unused materials.
                7. Go "File -> Save as"
                8. Browse to your Template directory, by default it is "C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 6\Resources\en-US\Templates"
                9. Give it a custom name, mine is "8th inch no profile"
                10. Go to "Windows -> Preferences"
                11. On the left select "Templates"
                12. From the drop down, select your new template.

Isn't the thing about warning of changes to the style a registry thing?

Hazza, it's just a personal preference but having Length Snapping on would drive me nuts. Since most of my SU work is drawing stuff that will actually be built and because I work closer than 1/16" in the shop, I set Precision higher.

Hazza, I looked at your template and the embeded style. The style was clearly updated with your changes at some point. If it had not been it would be clearly seen because the stye Icon would have had those arrows in a circle chasing one another. They weren't there so you did update and that is why you aren't getting the message.

Here is an example of a template saved without updating the style. Take a look at how the style icon looks in the style browser and also try to add a scene.

Anyway, you clearly did the deed, just forgot to mention it as a step.

I downloaded and used your file as a template. I see the two arrows in a circle, I do not see the warning dialogue box when I add a scene.

You'll only get the warning box if you've changed the style in some way from the previous scene. Or changed it away from the default settings before adding the first scene. Changing the style includes switching from Perspective to Parallel Projection of 2-point Perspective as well as Face Style and the settings you can make in the Styles browser.

No matter what I try it does not give me that warning. Can some one post a step by step guide?

GO to Window>Preferences>General and make sure the bottom check box is ticked. It enables SU to warn you of changes to the Style.

This is a registry setting and not part of the template.

Interesting, that warning is a default setting, I think. So it would have had to be turned off at some point.

This thread has given me an idea for a new thread. I shall call it Templates for Newbies, and I will post the first one with some useful textures for mechanical parts.

Ta da.... and now the penny drops as to why I do not get the warning. I just knew it had to be a tick box that stops annoying messages. It is a habit of mine to disable any warning messages when possible. I have been bitten once or twice instead of annoyed thousands.

Mind Hazza that if you use different styles in the same model, this is not an "annoying message" but a pretty useful dialog box where you can set different things.
