Faces between layers

hi, im having a very frustrating time figuring this out. Perhaps the solution has to do with me learning what groups are and how to use them. I have been designing a library and building most individual structures (floors, tables, walls, etc) in separate layers. I am now having an issue!! I made a staircase who's last stair sits flush with floor it connects to and the staircase and the floor are on separate layers. I can't get the side of the stairs to fill because when I try to close the end of the stair (touching the floor's thickness) it won't let me create a line. Can layers not share lines on the same face?? I'm desperate.....

Just a quick question. Are you making groups and/or components of the different structures (floor, walls etc) as and when you make them?

Layers do not separate geometry in SU - this is the very first and most important "lesson" you have to learn. They just control visibility. If you want to separate geometry (and prevent it interacting with other parts of the model), you will have to use groups - or if there are more instances of the same geometry, preferably components.
There must be some other problem in that model however, since you should be able to close the face of your last step in the staircase. Primitive (non grouped) geometry on different layers can (i.e. should be able in your model) share edges (although the particular edge will belong to either of the layers).

did you have switched off the floor layer?
if yes, I thinkt your line already exists, it is just made invisible. now you are trying to draw another line in the same place (SketchUp doesnt understand that, because it knows there already is a line).
like the others said: the only way is to build groups/components - which you should use in any case in order to keep a model organised and structured
