Erasing layer with locked plants
-
I have 3d plants I have to get rid of in my drawing, they are causing the drawing to freeze up, I tried to erase the layer, but the locked plants stayed and then it froze and I have to start the computer over, is there a way to erase locked plants with out opening the layer?

You should be able to do it wither using the outliner or the components dialog.
To get to both you jsut go window->components OR outliner.
Once youve got it open, you should just be able to righ click and delete the components.

Well, it's a bit more steps but the Outliner will do it. There you can select all instances > unlock them first and then > you can delete them.
The problem in the component browser is that the select all instances option (when right clicking) is greyed out with locked components.
Also, you can turn off the visibility of any other layers - ending up with only the locked components visible. Now you can make a big selection (select all (Ctrl+A), right click on the selection an unlock. Now you should be able to delete all (or delete the Layer with the plants). Without unlocking, even if you choose to delete the content while deleting the layer, it will put everything on Layer0.
Eventually, you need jnot even delete your plants; just turn the visibility of their layer off and turn it on only when you set a scene / camera viewpoint for a 2D image export for instance. When the layer is turned off, it should not really affect the performance only when opening/saving the model.

Thanks for the help, I have managed to remove all of the 3d objects from my drawing, It still runs a little slow, but at least I can work on it now. I could work with the layer off, but I had multiple things (plants/hardsape) on one layer:lesson learned. Current drawing size is 37,000 kb is this a really large drawing for SU (sorry might be a dumb question)

Yeah, 37mb is a very big model. You should be able to shrink it down by going window->model info->purge unused
This gets rid of all the materials and components in the model that arent actually being used.
