Ubuntu- plugins, etc

I've been messing with Sketchup (free versions) since Google pointed me at 'em, but I think I'll always be a noob.
Running XP SP2 (till SP3 comes in). I'm considering Ubuntu OS and wondering if there are issues involving SU free version's? Any other comments about Linux related to Sketchup? I know almost zero.
Another thing- If I purchase plugins- like that AWESOME Sudivide and Smooth- how should I protect them in event of "changes" to my OS or SU upgrades or whatever?
Is it just simply copy my Plugins folder and Models, etc. to a SD chip or CD? -
SU wont run natively on a linux OS, so if you want to try running it you'll need o do it using wine. wine is basically a virtualisation program for linux that lets you run windows apps. I havent tried it myself, but apparently its quite hard to get SU running at all under wine, and when you do it can be vrey unstable.
As for your plugins, it is as you say just a case of making a copy of the folder. Having said that, when i did that it didnt work, so it might be an idea to make a list of all the good ones so you can just re-download thme if/when you need to.
I think SP3 is out for windows btw, google it if you want to download it.

The very newest version of Ubuntu Linux ("Hardy Heron")is untested, as far as SketchUp goes. SketchUp supposedly ran reliably on Ubuntu Feisty (two releases ago) with WINE, but there were many issues getting it to work with Ubuntu Gutsy (the previous release)...which was a real shame because Ubuntu was much improved between the two.
I just downloaded my copy of Ubuntu Hardy, and if I have a chance over the weekend I'll install it on a workstation and see if I can luck out with getting SU on it. But I'm not holding my breath.

SketchUp Pro installed without a hitch on Ubuntu Hardy with WINE, although it did require the same Registry changes noted above. On my newer workstation, all the commands seem to work properly...including the file export functions...as do the built in .rb tools such as the Sandbox. However, and most peculiarly, none of the third-party Ruby plug-ins, or even those that come from Google itself, will work at all. On startup SketchUp brings up a list of errors with each of these Ruby files, but the line numbers cited just as often seem to be comment lines!
Oh, and Layout will not work at all. But who gives a fig about that?

Free version of SketchUp seems to work with WINE and Ubuntu Hardy Heron on my older workstation...
However, fast feedback is disabled and there is a tendency for the window to go black for a few seconds following minimizing or resizing. There were a couple of unaccountable crashes while I had SketchUp minimized. The delete key doesn't delete (I have to use the Eraser on anything). And it seems a little slow...
I had to make some changes to the WINE Registry to get this to work (otherwise crash on startup):
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\SketchUp6\GLConfig\Display]
"FIRST_TIME"=dword:00000000
"HW_OK"=dword:00000001[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\SketchUp6\Google SketchUp TOTD]
"HelpPage"="0"
"ShowOnStartUp"="false"[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\SketchUp6\SnappyInstructor]
"Show"="0"This is on a quad-core Pentium D with four gigs and decent NVidia card with a half-gig of VRAM from about two years ago (there's no convenient system profiler in Ubuntu, or at least I can't find one, and offhand I don't remember what is in this).
Oh, and Compiz needs to be turned off from Appearance Preferences > Visual Effects.
Is this worth doing just to be free of Windows or Mac OS? I don't know. It's likely there are some bugs I haven't found yet. As opposed to wasting a few hours seeing if the Pro version will work on one of my machines on Linux, it might make more sense to adapting my working methods to some Linux-native app.
