      Good day all,
      Here is the situation:
      I have created a TIN (w/faces) from contour lines in Simuterra.
      Exported as .dxf, then imported to SU, all is good.

      I Made adjustments to reflect improved areas on the terrain (flattened a large pad where Airplane hangars will be constructed)to name one. Things are still good.

      Now I wish to have the entire site with improvements milled into 8lb.foam (CNC machine), they will require .stl file. They can drape 2d road/lot/trail info on to model,but I wish to show the significntly altered areas.

      I have tried export to .stl ruby (small & large sample of file...just hangs fo hours).

      The site is 9100'w x 6200'h x 340' vertical.

      Anyone attempted/succeded with anything like this out of SU?

        I used Rhino to convert the SketchUp file to (for that machine) an IGES file, which SurfCAM converted in turn to the appropriate G-code, but I have also sent SketchUp through Rhino to STL for 3D printing.

        Short of buying Rhino, have you tried this piece of Open Source Software?

        It seems to have come a long way, although I've never tried the STL export function. You would of course have to bring in your SketchUp model as a 3DS or one of their other importable formats. Just from a brief experiment, it seems to me that you might get a more reliable export to Meshlab from SU if you explode all components and groups first.

          Meshalab certainly looks like an option....thanks for the link.
          I actually attempted several.3ds exports as well, and I get Bugsplat every time.
          I don't know now.......perhaps my hardware is just not robust enough to handle this?

            Hmmm...maybe that is the problem, although that doesn't seem like an impossibly big model on a modern computer. There is a limitation, although I don't think you've reached it, on the number of surfaces that can be in a 3DS file. Why don't you try to export your model as an OBJ, DXF or a DAE model and try that with Meshlab?

              i think the limitation is right around 62,000 polygons for 3ds.

                Well I could not get .obj or .dae to play nice either...more bugsplat on the monitor.
                It occured to me to ck out Deep Exploration Standard, as their trial version saved my Bacon once.
                Well DE Saved me again it looks like. 😍
                I was able to open an exported DWG and save as .stl

                  I can't remember where I read about the polygon limit, but it is for real, unfortunately.

                  I want to say that either SU or Cheetah 3D actually tells you that you are trying to export more than the accepted amount of 62,000 (or so).
