OSX Leopard mouse behavior part 2
-
I am experiencing a very annoying mouse bug in Leopard 10.5.2, but it is only noticeable when dealing with large models.
I am using a Logitech Laser mouse and Steermouse as my method of assigning mouse behavior.
Of course, I have the scroll wheel button set to mouse button 3, in order to activate the orbit tool.
On large models, when using the middle click to activate the orbit tool, the view lags so badly that it is virtually unusable. It can easily take 5-10 seconds for the model to "catch up" to what the mouse has done. Not only that, but the view also behaves unexpectantly, with weird out of plane shifts, almost as if it is caught somewhere between perspective and parallel projection cameras. It is hard to explain, but it is really quite awful.
The crazy thing is that if I actually choose the Orbit tool and use the left mouse button to utilize it, like any other tool, then the orbit works as expected. Super fast, no lag, and no weird shifts. So, obviously, the Orbit tool works, so what on earth is the difference between the middle mouse button activating the orbit tool and using the orbit tool as a tool with the left button.
I have tried every variation of button settings I can think of and nothing seems to modify the behavior.
Any suggestions? I am tearing my hair out over this!
Thanks in advance and I hope there is something that can be done, unlike the other bugs I have found, which Google lists as known issues in their help center, but has done nothing to actually fix them, one of which I have known about since the day V.6 released.

I have contacted support, too, FWIW. I'll post what I hear from them, if and when that I do.

Thanks for the report. If you noticed, 10.5.3 is out, and if you haven't done the Leopard Graphics Update, you can forgo that and just update to 10.5.3. We've been unable to reproduce this, but we'll see if your steps help. Thanks a bunch.

and when you mean "large models", how large, in terms of faces and size? If I was to reproduce this, is there a model publicly available, that would come close - 3dwarehouse or elsewhere? Thanks.

Hi Barry, thanks for seeing this.
I have just upgraded to 10.5.3, so I will test out some of my bigger models.
I notice this particularly when I have a lot of geometry selected and then try to orbit with the middle mouse button.
I have experienced this when only 500, or so, polygons are selected. Of course, some of my models are 2 million polygons, so I expect some lag with these, but there is (was?) a noticeable difference between the mouse button orbit and the orbit tool.
Another thing I did which seemed to help out a lot was to modify my double click delay time to a large number. I have a sneaking suspicion that I had this set too short and that SU would get confused by me click-and-holding.
I let you know after I have put some hours in with the new OS.
Thanks again for the time

And an update on mine: I ran about 6 hours of automated tests against one of my models. Mine only had about 100K polygons (75 MB skp file), and I made random selections and orbits, at different speeds, but I used the orbit tool and not the middle mouse down orbit. I didn't play with double click delay time, but what did you use double click for in this sequence?
And please, another appeal to all: let us know how things work for you after either the 10.5.3 update or if you stay with 10.5.2 for any reason, after the Leopard Graphics Update. Thanks!

Hi Barry.
It is weird that you are experiencing no peculiarities. With the latest and greatest 10.5.3, I was experiencing very bad orbiting on a model with 42,000 faces.
If I edited it as a component with 5 or 6 copies, it would lag terribly. If I selected a large portion of the model, I also got very laggy performance.
Yes, the orbit tool has always worked with no problems for me, too; I am referring to orbiting by holding down the middle mouse button.
I did not double click anything, it is just that the orbiting performance seemed to improve if I set the double click delay to longer.
Truth be told, I was having worse performance today, with the latest OS than I was with 5.2.
Thanks!
