I'm building a building with a 4 sided roof. I draw out the shape onto the top surface of the building, then go to pull it up using the move tool, as i've seen done before on tutorials, and the roof only stretches horizontaly, not vertically upwards. Can someone explain as simply as possible how to fix this?

Probably your roof shape is not wholly rectangular, so moving up would create creases in the roof surfaces. If you press Alt/Option when moving, you will be able to move in the blue direction (It's called autofold). Probably you will see some unexpected diagonal edges turn up.

ok here it is, I drew the floor plan then added the textures then created a rectangle on top of the building which will be the roof. Not sure if this is a good way to go about doing things but im kind of experimenting with the features at the moment.

                onlinetsr,

You can force the move tool to move things (in this case the middle line) alond any of the axes by hitting the left, up/down or right arrow keys (to lock the movement along the green, blue or red axis).

                In your case,

                1. select the line (as you already did in the picture),
click on it with the move tool
                2. hit either the up or down arrow keys
                3. start moving (you can even enter a fix value into the VCB and hit Enter).
                  So simple...

                Gai...

Thanks all, managed to solve the problem. Got another now though lol. I'm working out how to design a bike frame on sketchup and want to know how you would go about extruding a tube at an angle from the side of another. I would also like to know how you would make the diameter of a tube progressively smaller as you move down it. Any help would be appreciated!

Instead of extruding the pipes from each other, id probably do it by making standard frame sections and moving/rotating them into place.

If you do want to try it by extruding the sections, i reckon you need the follow me tool, draw in a series of lines to represent the frame, the draw in a circle perpendicular to the end of each line, then use the folow me tool to get you tube.
