SketchUp "Ribbon Art"

John,
Thanks for the feedback!
Yeah, the first 4 images are just different views into the model. This first model was a little too wild. The second perhaps a little too controlled. I'm going to give it a third try aiming for something in between. I had to work out some new techniques for making these, and now that I have the techniques under control I should be able to produce some more compelling images.

go 3... I quite like this one... very time consuming to make unfortunately ... 4 views of the model

I like this one a lot fred, reminds me of those big dinosaur displays you get at museums for some reason

Yup... those giant skeletal rib cages.

Wow! You should get yourself and those creations to an art gallery!
Seriously!

Hi Fred!
Nice to see some new work. I really like the last one the best. The middle one is a little bland. The first one is interesting, but i think this method doesn't mix as well with the texture you selected. I think it is because the geometry of the model is so connected - the texture just seems to be fighting that.
Thanks for sharing.........and please keep experimenting!

ecofeco... Thanks for your comments, both here and the other art thread. Much appreciated! I'll continue to look for opportunities to sell my SketchUp "art" but for now it's just a hobby. I'm glad to hear you think it might interest some people. One problem with SketchUp is that curved work tends to show its segmentation as you print works at larger scales. I hope that SU 7 will support higher-poly geometry and make this less of an issue.
bytor... I mostly agree with your analysis, although I think the problem with the first model isn't necessarily the textures, but perhaps just the way I threw it together. I hope to try something similar this weekend but with 3d ribbons like those in the 3rd model, and more controlled offsets between ribbons.
Thanks again for the feedback.

Futuristic Fbartels,
I'm all down with this action. Very killer.
Very 1960s vibe to me for some reason -- in the very best of ways...
I'm all into the notions of that time -- the abstract expressionist movement is all rocking on.
This has a bit of a James Rosenquist deal going on -- perhaps yeah?
I really Jack bird dig that Jim Dine cat... Nice... But the bug kicker in my book is all Robert Motherwell.
Yeah.
You have brought is.

Fred,
That first group is growing on me now....so I think you may be right about the texture not being the problem. Plus - I would love to have a little 1' high solid model of the "dinosaur rib cage" sculpture on my desktop! I would promise to turn it slightly every day so I would be able to peer into it from a different persective.
