Politics Forum....
-
come on - the original corner bar at sketchup was full of political rants. remember Gary?
I think the politics forum is a good idea - if you don't like it - stay out of it!I've learnt a lot about other people's and other country's attitudes to all sorts of social and political situations. For the better IMHO.
Yes - one of the mods is outspoken and forceful in his political attitudes - what gave me the shits was when someone here started a thread then abused him and me for taking part in it.
At a musician's forum I frequent the political forum would out post the rest of the forums 5:1. That's the nature of forums.

I think the rationale behind having a "separate" political forum is a great idea. In theory. In theory, it is supposed to keep the "rants" out of the hair of the people who are really disturbed by them. However, because I believe most people are in "View Active topics" view, they will be just as "in your face" as they always were. Now if you could prevent the political forum threads from appearin in the "active topics" list, and one could only visit them with a predetermined decision to do so, then you've accomplished the goal. So, can you remove the political threads from being included in the "view active topics"? Not for me, I am always curious what is being said, but for the sake of those who really don't want to know about it.

Andy,
you could always drown it out with posting a ton of your beautiful work
I sure hope you stick around...For me, I've learned that even though my point of view may not agree with some people (whether they are out spoken or not) there is always something to learn from them. Even if it's only tolerance.
We each have our own story that has shaped our views, that's what's most interesting. Over time as those come out and I will be able to learn from another person's perspective.
Maybe if you see that you won't ever agree with a person you can just say ok, we'll have to totally disagree on that issue, but you can't just dismiss a human being entirely because you don't agree with their politics...
It's a pretty big world so there are a lot of opposing views out there and I'm assuming it's okay if those are reflected in here. -
well I wonder who they could be talking to...? mmm let me think for a minute?
btw this thread should be in the Politics area, under tolerance. or the lack there of?
the reason you see all of those threads is because we went through and moved all the old politics threads to it.
and of course you didn't bother to read any of those right wing radical threads, because most are not even about what you think they are... like most who complain about others, you have not researched your "rant".
and as Tom so ineloquently points out, without truth.
there are 31 post there at the moment. of those 5 are mine, if that is "most" then my math needs some reworking. however of "MY posts" that you two consider soooo egregious are...examples
1 "a moment of silence for those lost on 7/7 in the UK"- self explanatory
2 "Boycott France?" - a thread about me ending my boycott of france because of a wonderful gesture
3 "Sunset in Baghdad" - just that, a picture my soldier buddy sent me of a sunset in Baghdad, which I said I did not want to debate about the war but Tom came and as he is so fond of saying, "hijacked my thread"
4 "Interview with a Soldier"
-where I offered to interview my friend to let you, ask him questions
5 "is there life out there?" - an entirely non right wing thread, seeing how right wingers believe in God and that removes the belief of Aliens because God says man is all there is.
Far right? I am Far right? as I have said time and time and time again, I am a centrist, I believe in ... to name a few...
1 a woman's right to chose
2 drug legalization
3 cloning, and stem cell research
4 no God involved of any form in government
5 and unlike your unliberal self, FREE SPEECH!these things alone are enough to have my RNC card which I don't have btw, revoked and have me run out on a rail of any republican meeting... the fact is, I'm Libertarian if anything.
so what you really must mean is that my support of our soldiers in Iraq is what makes me soooo RIGHT WING, sorry but I'll never stop supporting those brave souls...
you can stay or go, I'm not begging anyone, I have contributed more to this forum than anyone else... I spend hours upon hours everyday, trying to help people here, making sure they get answers or at least acknowledgement, with in minutes of their posts. I am courteous, and helpful, and if I might say so myself quite complimentary, especially to someone which I disagree politically with TOM!
I dare you to put up a vote and see what most people here think of my disposition towards others...
so should someone move you personal attack to the personal attacks forum? because why don't you all just come out and say who you're talking about? it's so very obvious... and it includes a total lack of appreciation for all the other things I do here. that not one person in this thread mentioned...
so much for friends...
- self explanatory

Coen, forgive me but I'm not sure that I agree with you. There are many people out there who don't believe that airing your political views is "seemly". Certainly in a regular business climate it is a topic that is best left alone.
I don't believe that because a person wishes to have a place to come to follow his specific SketchUp related interest without having "world issues" upset him, that it means he does not like to be faced with an opposing view. It just means that the world issues themselves are upsetting and he would want this to be a place to not be reminded. Surely you can appreciate that? We all come here expecting different things, and while I may appreciate learning about another person's political outlook, even if I disagree with those views, another person may not appreciate and it is not unreasonable for said person to expect to have the SketchUcation Forum limited to SketchUp related info if that is what he wants. If there is some way to respect this not-unreasonable expectation, I think it should be done. Just make the political issues available to those who are interested and for the rest, perhaps it should be less "in your face"
-
Susan, you have to click on the politics forum to see any of this. then you have to click on the thread.
if you don't want to see it, then they don't have to click it.
-
yes coen, not unreasonable means reasonable. Just a pointed way of saying so.
If it isn't possible to filter the view active topics, it isn't possible. Then removing the political discussions would be impinging on the rights of others who are interested in them. So, I see you have done the very best that you can to meet the needs of all. thanks Coen. -
I just caught the bit about Kris and I"d like to make a few comments too. Kris often states some very unpopular opinions. Often what he says flys in the face of what my "gut" says or what the press has led me to believe but he always backs up what he says with some very arresting information. What he says often gives me pause given that it is presented with facts that provide a very different twist to a reality that I thought I understood. I find he is very sincere in his beleifs and enthusiastic and only very rarely get's hot under the collar.
I have seen others on the other hand resort to name calling,or very nasty rude commentary, or intentionally misrepresenting what he says in order to be inflamatory. (ie, when one says that something is not "white" it is not tantamount to saying that it is black and it really is intentional baiting to react to the comment as though the individual had indeed said it was black) In short, I have learned a lot from Kris's comments, I very much appreciate his point of view and the opportunity to really excercise my mind and re examine my thoughts. I may end up still not agreeing with him, but not without really thinking out first and coming to understand why he may think the way that he does. That is all good.I am ashamed that I have not rushed to Kris's defence more often.

back to the topic: andy, please reconsider! it would be a great loss for the sketchup community!
personally, i scan every day the gallery for your work, if you have come up with something new, and every time look at the pictures with my mouth open. you have been such an inspiration!
so please... but if you decide not to post your work here anymore, it's your decision, please pm me, where you have moved on to

I wish I could write the words that come out my mouth or I say in my head but I have never been able too, and I therefore never participate in a 'serious' thread because I can never express in print what I truly feel or I end up unintentionally offending people by miss-expressing what I'm trying to say.
BUT I do read them (to a point)
I was about to delete the above because I couldn't think of the words to finish it but doing that would only be my own self fulfilling prophecy based on what I'd just written!
So I'll leave it at that.

Politics...religion!! I feel that they should be completely shut out of here...I have rarely seen those threads go anywhere but finnally into the toilet. I deleted a thread once. ( I could get rid of it cause I was a moderator at the time) Of course there was a great cry about it and I expected that, but like you I thought the thread had turned to poisen and it needed to be killed and removed so that all wouldn't stumble into the sh*t.
that is purely your opinion. I have a different opinion which I am entitled to. I resent you trying to force your opinion onto me by deleting threads, thank you very much.
I might add you don't even have the courtesy to indicate where you come from in your profile.
