    Hi πŸ˜„

I am new here, but have been playing in Sketchup for a while. I'm not a great modeller but find it fun all the same πŸ˜„

Does anyone have an easy but effective way of making a ship's bow? If so, would you be able to provide some screens?

    Thanks in advance!

      Welcome SA,

A ship's bow is just a coplanar curve. May I assume that you have the plans of a particular ship? You could use the arc tool and draw connecting arcs to represent the bow. Look out for the blue arc connected to the previous one, showing that you get a smooth curve. I think you should provide more info to answer this question.

Coming from a newbie myself, I think I would have tried using the Soap skin and Bubble tool, but it just timed out on the night of the April,10th, so the tool is gone for now!

          I already miss this tool!

The ideal way would be to use bezier curves and connect them with the skin.rb. At least that's how I could build some fairly nice looking hulls.

Here (in the Hungarian forums) kephalos posted a model of the Mayflower he made (he also provided a link to his website with the skp model so that you can investigate - note that it's a really huge model).

The sails were made with the SSB plugin (now expired as I hear) and have thickness because he was going to render it in Kerky.

            Gai...

Hi, and thanks for the replies, sorry I didn't give enough info. I'm looking for a passenger ship bow. I have been looking around and found this technique, but on trying it, I end up in a mess!

Would someone be able to point me in the right direction on how to do this please? πŸ˜„

              Thanks very much!

Cheat! Download the free version of DelftShip . Create you hull in that, export as a DXF mesh that you can re-import into SketchUp.

This is one of the demo hulls included with the download, there is a library of close to 200 other hulls on the site; or you can play with your own waterlines, stations and buttocks if you prefer πŸ˜‰

                Bob

Half-hull mesh from Delftship, cleaned and cloned in SU, quick render in Kerkythea.
