when you prepare a file to export to a render app, do you keep the SUp trees in it? in case you do not, how do you mark their positions for further insertion in the rendering app?

in my first tries at rendering, i have noticed the SUp trees look bad when exported.

i just paint some faces of TIN-plane(landscape), using for example: green-color...like uv-mapping technics - for c4d and ect.
or use segments-faces(which will be hidden...same as on your landscape) to populate trees objects in Kerky2008

When using a renderer other than Podium, I use pink 3d boxes to represent trees, if there are more than one species then I will use another unusual color and log the color to species so that when imported into renderer I can substitute the box for the 3d model effortlessly.
This works great in Vue and Max.
I do not export trees from SU as trees are normally very heavy and I prefer 'solid growth' trees to static ones.

this sounds like a great tip. i am assuming i can replace the boxes in any good rendering application, right?. is this notion valid for people and vehicles too?

yes, it works with any 3d model/component thats free standing (not attached or within another)

It works with whatever kind of model you want to insert... πŸ˜„

I use it very often together with KT... πŸ˜‰
I.e. in SU I place 2D trees, which allows me to generate some previews before I render...
When exporting using the SU2KT, I can export the 2D trees as instances and in KT these instances are being replaced by instanced 3D Xfrog trees... πŸ˜„
This way the 2D trees have a function as "dummies" allowing me to orbit the scene/model in SU and then when I render the scene in KT, they're being replaced by Xfrog trees, which would be almost impossible to handle in SU... (in particular if there's more than one...)

                Cheers

But you cannot replace the dummies in an automated way while instancing, can you?

Not automated - but in KT you right click the "dummy" instance and then you can replace it with another instance... πŸ˜‰
But we are working on a more automated process... πŸ˜„

OK then I did remember well from the KT Forums. πŸ˜‰

Thanks for working on it - it would extremely speed up the workflow (imagine using it with Didier's component spray tool!) πŸ‘
