      dylan,

you are quite right in thinking about creating something you can control yourself.

i have a site which was built from scratch by a former student/trainee of mine (who learned how to do it in html while in my office). then he went to live in germany and i got stuck with a site that i can hardly update.

so now i am looking for someone who could do it for me on a regular basis (which will cost me, of course). the other alternative is to learn how to do it myself. the latter appeals to me much more but my day has only 24 hours; i doubt i would be able to fit anything extra into my work day, unless i stopped sleeping or give my family up.

thus starting with the wish to be in control is a very good idea.

good luck. i shall keep an eye on this thread.

            Hi Modelhead
Really enjoying this thread. I'm right at the beginning of building a web page, paid a very small amount for the first year, and the instructions are as clear as mud.

I think I'm going to move.

Thanks very much for your time its greatly appreciated.

              Hi Bruce
To some meat on the bone so to speak here are some details.
1 At present I have my broadband account with talktalk and I wish to
              stay with them for now.

2 I have registered my domain name with yahoo.
              http://www.hand-cut-dovetails.com.

3 I have viewed their very clear preview of some packages available and I’m impressed.

In the early stages this is what I want to display on the web.

I will call it project 1

‘A step by step guide on how to make a through dovetail joint in wood
              using hand methods’
I will explain a little here.
To achieve that I will probably cover.
a My blade profile for marking out.
b My blade profiles for marking out the dovetails.
c The templates that I have designed to allows you to mark
out the joints ‘by hand’ using a knife.
d other bits and pieces required

Now, I have nearly completed my first draft. It has been compiled in Microsoft word with images of the models I have made in sketchup imported as jpgs.

I will want to convert this into a pdf document so it is readable across all platforms (said he hopefully) and I would like people to be able to download this document from my site. I may use software to imbed some of my models in 3d.

I would also like people to be able to actually download the sketchup models for the above stuff.

              Project 2
I will then explain in detail how I made a lapped dovetail joint using
              hand methods.

              Format as per project 1.

If my web site appears popular, I will then want to charge for the next project, so I will need facilities for that as well.

Is this possible with the Yahoo software?

Just for your info I’ll not be able to spend much time on this project starting Monday probably for the next fortnight, because of other full time commitments. However, I will be popping in every day to view any postings on this thread.

              thanks again,

              Alan

                Hi Bruce
A few questions on what you have written so far that I am not 100% clear about. I think I know the answers to some of my questions, but I hate assuming.

Of utmost importance to the purchase of a service is the ISP’s connection to the registrar((?)

These can be different entities. Your ISP must provide as part of your “control panel” (?)something called “domain services”. (?) You must be able to get at your domain to adjust DNS(?) configuration or move to a different
DNS host or transfer your domain name. If this is left to email sessions to third party registrars, I would take a second look at the provider. If on the other hand the provider gives you a custom front end((?????) to control your domain as part of the “control panel tool set” then great…you are in control! As long as your account with the ISP is maintained you can have personal control of the domain through your panel.

                Thanking you

                Alan

                  Hi Bruce,
                  thanks for the last.

I’ll just clarify a few things from your last posting.

*If you have not picked or played with any page development tools don't worry.*Reply. I’m a complete novice.

*I expect we need to do a bit of branding as well as you have probably not started to developed theme for your page.*Reply. Done nothing on this topic yet.

Question re ‘entry level business plan’?

If I go to the yahoo small business web page it gives me three options
                  Get Online
                  Sell Online
                  Market Online.

‘Get Online’ Web hosting package give me three options.
                  a	starter
                  b	standard
                  c	professional.

Do you mean the starter package?

Re sending you my draft material. I’ll clean that up today, and send that to the email address on your web page because the file is quite large.

With regards to your strategy a bit thumbs up to that.

                  thanking you

                  Alan

that's the difference in 67.00 per year and 240.00

                            Hi guys,
Well some people cannot see the bigger picture eh.

We have Modelhead who has been running with a particular product for years, is willing to share that knowledge with brand spanking new beginners on the subject like myself, for free.

Just think of all the people who would benifit from this help. What would it cost for 1 to 1 tuition.

Kris. Why dont you continue with your thread on building a web page using your provider, your software, step by step and allow people who wish to follow your path, travel along it.

It would be very helpful and greatfully appreciated by many I'm sure.

                            Cheers

                            Hazel. 😉 😉

I was happy to be following this subject, and intended to get involved, and work on my own stagnant non-happening thought of a webpage.

                                      Modelhead,
I agree with the route you are taking. My experience with doteasy started about 5 years ago and the first couple of years there were server problems a lot, and i complained a lot. They always were very attentive though and since that time have (over the last few years) i've experienced no server problems or interuptions.
I look forward to hearing others experiences. Keep in mind my site is small and doesn't get the traffic i would've hoped....

Well im on board also Bruce and yes with Yahoo.
I looked at the basic small business package, the cost, the service and tools provided and thought im happy to pay £6 per month for that.
If I was to purchase a similar package here in the UK it would cost a lot more.
Another bonus is you are not tied into a contract, you pay month by month and so can move whenever you wish.

                                          Hi guys,
I've signed up to the Yahoo starter package, downloaded their web page building tools and I'm as happy as a pig in ....

For those thinking of using the same package that I have purchased, Yahoos web page building tools will only work with Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

Their package will allow you to use some other software to build your web pages. You need to check this out.

I'm think I'm so damn lucky having someone on this forum walking me through, step by step, building my skills and taking me to another level.

A big thumbs up to Bruce.
