FireGL Issues
-
Recently got a new computer (GeForce2, 512 RAM on old one, yegods)
XP Pro SP2
Intel Core2 Duo E6750 2.66 GHZ
2 gigs of ram
ATI FireGL V5600(no clue on power supply, how can I check on that w/o cracking open the CPU case?)
Fire GL I thought would work alright (cpu was ordered before I knew ATI was bad for SU) with SU. As per http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=3966
Out of the box SU was rotating nicely, was working slow when moving/drawing (small, not complicated drawing) So I turned off Hardware Accelration after some research. This helped with both rotating and drawing.
However, I am having issues within large, complicated drawings- I turn on Hardware acceleration, panning, rotating is smooth, but working within the drawing, i.e. moving, drawing, etc... is jerky, choppy.
When I turn off H/W Acc, the opposite is true, rotating is jerky, but working within the drawing is reasonably smooth (may not be for some)
Would switching to Nvidia give me both smooth functions?

to check your systems hardware (and software, actually) download this: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html quite a useful little program.

I did not see an power supply indication on the Belarc site. I also am not sure how this would fix my problem- it does not give me a recommendation to "upgrade" or "fix".
I'm sorry Juju, what is PSU? (Power supply Unit?) And would this possibly be why I am having issues, the power supply?
Thanks~

Remus, I'm not aware of a software solution that can tell what rating PSU you have installed (Belarc doesn't, did an install and checked), best if Carl consults the dealer he purchased the machine from, maybe it says on his Invoice even.
Carl, maybe have a look at the ATi driver control panel and toy with some settings, particularly with Antialiasing & Anisotropic Filtering, maybe it'll help.

It shouldn't really, if the PSU (yes, you're right in your deduction about the acronym) is too weak you run the risk of damaging hardware, then again the PSU will probably die on you before major damage is incurred, unless it catches fire.
Go to the OpenGL preferences panel in SU (window>preferences>OpenGL) and have a look at the settings. Try switching the fast feedback on and off and check if there is a difference in the behaviour between the two settings.
Attached is a screenshot of my setup. BTW, I changed my GFX from an ATi X1950GT 512MB to a nVidia 8800GTX 768MB not too long ago.

sorry, didnt realise it didnt tell you anyting about the psu, its just the program i usually use for finding out about system hardware, so i assumed it would have some info aobut the psu.
carl, the program was not intended to fix your problem, i was just trying to help with
@unknownuser said:(no clue on power supply, how can I check on that w/o cracking open the CPU case?)

Carl, don't get too worried, nVidia Quadro cards also seem to have some issues in SU, see Tom's problems here.
-
No difference if I use Fast Feedback or not.
Any more ideas?
Thanks,

Nope, sorry, I'm out of ideas. Just make sure you have the latest drivers, I heard that the latest ATi drivers are better than the previous ones, don't know if its true for the FireGL range as well.

Here http://www.ogleearth.com/2006/09/google_earth_40_3.html are some suggestions regarding videocard (FireGL in particular)settings for Google Earth. Not sure it will work for SU, but who knows... Hope it will help.
