Troubles with 3Ds import
-
I am trying to import some models into Sketchup that had been converted into the .3Ds format using MilkShape 3D 1.7.0. The problem is that although Milkshape shows a textured model, Sketchup does not as it says it cannot find the textures for it.
I checked out the Sketchup Help Centre about the problem and it read:

I'm getting a message that SketchUp could not create texture when I import a 3DS file.
If you want a 3DS import to include textures, before the import you must save the texture files in the same folder as the 3ds file itself.
However, the textures are in the same folder with the .3Ds file.
I had tried using Biturn which can convert a .ms3d (MilkShape 3D) model into a .3Ds model. However, some textures are miss positioned resulting in "holes" where the texture is transparent. (The model itself is still fine.) Notice the "holes" in the horns and rear.
If anyone can offer some help that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I have never used Milkshape so my opinions may not work for you. Is there an option to select the type of image export? If yes use .bmp or .jpg.
I assume you require the texture to be mapped to mesh, if not why not texture in SU using the same textures you used in Milkshape?
I use Vue inf for mapping complexed meshes and then bake to polygons before exporting, I make sure that if the model is in say inches I set SU to inches too before importing.Hope this helps.

All the textures are .png and I do not believe there is a way to change that. How does a .png texture affect the import?
You brought up a good point with the units but there isn't an option to change it.
I think I got the problem...MilkShape 3D never exported the textures that I expected to go along with it. I open the exported file and there it was...without textures. Does anyone know how to include the textures with the exported model?

I honestly cannot explain why .png exported textures give problems as I never bothered to find out once I realised .bmp and .jpg worked everytime.
If you cannot establish the units used in Milkshape then a few tests can be done to determine what works best, I would assume cm's will work as the app is European after all.
Normally when exporting a model you have a settings drop box where it can be selected, however that does not mean SU will always import it.
