I was asked by some-one if it is possible to cut an old wooden barrel in half without it falling apart.
That got me thinking about how I might model a barrel.
So I gave it a try.
    What do you think?

And this is what it would look like if were busted apart.

Ha Ha. Did you use Sketchy Physics to bust it apart?

So, what was the answer to the original question about cutting one in half?

If the bottom and top of the barrel are left in place, they can surely be cut in half (we've got a pair used as planters in the back yard now). In fact, if the wood has not shrunk and cause looseness in the barrel, should hold alright without the bottom/top in place as long as the rings are intact.

May all your dimensions be the sum of their total.

Here's one that Alan posted on the old @last forum.

Oh! Alans barrel is a lot nicer than mine. I just eye-balled the curve and the dimensions. Alan's barrel looks like it's accurately modeled after the real thing. I like the texture too.

The problem with the way he wanted to cut the barrel was that he wanted it cut in half length-wise, thereby cutting the hoops as well.

I told him it's possible only if he first screwed each stave to the hoops before cutting and that he'd need to make wooden semi circles for the ends to maintain the shape as the hoops were of very thin metal and when cut would not retain their shape.
I got an e-mail from him saying that the operation was a success. 😎

Aha, should have figured it would not be as simple as cutting in half as I had assumed.

Here's one that I just made, it's sketchy physics enabled. To bad I cant get the lower rings to stay on.
