Textures
-
Am I missing something ? I don't apply any textures to my model till it's complete however then when I want to position a texture I have to explode my group or component in the model, then I have to make it a group again which means now I also have to rename it in the outliner, this tends to be very tedious. Is there another way or should I apply textures as I model? It would be nice to have a rotate option when editing textures.

Hi Mike,
you d'on't have to explode your group or component. You have to edit it by triple clicking on it.After your textures are correctly placed, just click outside the component. Hope to be clear, my english is by far not good enough.

Sorry I missed your last point.
You can rotate your textures in the component with right clic then texture. You can do more than that. You can also create textures with the grain vertical and horizontal. So the you just have to chose the correct one. This is a tip I learned from Dave Richards Master -
That is exactly what I'm talking about, I'm rotating some wood grains. I can right click a component>edit component>texture>position, however with a group I don't have this option, have to explode to get the texture option, then have to make it a group again after rotating my texture. Is there a easier way?

Sorry I did not get you correctly. I'll try again
I made a box and create a group of it. Double click, select the face to be textured. Then paint bucket and paste the texture. Now with mouse right clic on the texture, "texture" option is available.
Turn you texture say 90° and clic outside the group.
Selecting again the box I can see that it remains a group.
So IMO I just edit the group without exploding it.
If you create a group with many components in it you can do the same way. First double clic on the group to open it, then triple clic on the component you want to edit.
I'm not sure if this is the answer you expected. If not I'm sur that other nice people will help you here

Thanks for the reply Jean-Franco, I understand what you did, you applied your textures one face at a time to your group, what I did was just "paint" the whole group at once, then when I tried to rotate the texture on just one face of the group I couldn't without exploding it. Niether option seems to be a good one, either apply textures to each indiviual face in a group or explode groups that were painted at once to position texture on the faces that need it and regroup, both can be very tedious in a large group.

Mike,
Jean-Franco is right about 'there is no need to explode the group or component'.
However I think you are talking about a group or component painted 'from the outside'. In this case you don't have the option 'Texture' when right clicking and indeed you do have to explode or repaint from within the group/component.
What you need to do to avoid this is to paint the groups/components faces from the inside, in 'Edit'-mode. That way each face can have its own texture and will give you the option 'Texture'>'Position' etc. when right clicking on the face in question.
Shortly: make all the groups and/or components bla bla bla... till you have your whole model finished. Now when you are going to use texture go in to 'Edit'-mode of each group or component. Don't paint the whole group or component at once unless you don't want to make ajustments to the texture.
Texture done 'on the lowest level so on face level' will let you ajust this texture.Wo3Dan

In edit mode you don't need to apply paint to each individual face. you can always hit ctrl-a and this will select all faces. Then apply paint. You'll need to apply it to the front and the back (beige and blue) faces.
Or holding down shift while painting also adds an ability to paint all faces of the same material with the material on the paintbrush. Something like that.
So anyhow, there are 2 fast was to paint faces instead of one by one.

Speaking of components (only) this edit > paint also has the advantage that all the instances of the same component will be changed - i.e. you don't need to paint them one by one (which is the case when you paint the outside of their context).
Looking at your example pics, you may well have quite a lot of instances of the same components so this (even with entering to edit mode then aligning textures on some faces) can even be faster that painting them one by one.Note that this does not work with groups but I also suggest that if you have more than one instance of anything "groupable", make it a component instead both for the above reason and because this way you can keep file size smaller.
