First of all welcome here and welcome to SketchUp. Fun isn't it?

Here are a few links to some threads about building boats in SU.
      Check them out.

            Hey,

Thanks for all the help. I guess that from what I see the hull is the hardes part to draw. How hard will it be to draw from the picture I had in the link. Just trying to get some ideas. Thanks

            Don

              Don,

Certainly you are right - the hull (being a kind of organic shape) is the hardest part.

I have to tell you that this particular pair of imagees are not the best for modelling. The curves that appear in the top image should have their "pairs" in the bottom image, too, so that you could match them in 3D.
The best would actually be if there were a third image from the bow/rear of the boat, too (thus we could see the curves of the ribs as well), to have even more precise reference points.

Are you particularly keen on modelling this boat or just interested in general?

Ok I have some images that you are talking about. I will post some and see what we can do. Thanks.

Cool. I also like boats and have played around with some "experimental" hulls already:

And also a sail for instance:

I like historic boats/ships more though...

Sorry everybody, I have removed these things from the WH and havent updated this thread yet.
I'll upload them to somewhere later and fix the links.

                    Hello Don,

There is a free hull design program called freeship.
                    This is the link
                    http://sourceforge.net/projects/freeship/
                    regards

Basically all you need to realise anything in 3D are these things:

                      • top view

                      • left or right view (left and right in case of asymmetry)

                      • back view

                      • optional: 2 (preferably more) perspective shots: these can be pictures or whatever. These are not required but do make the process much easier.

Modelling a boat is similar to modelling a car:
I learned to model cars in 3ds Max though the same modelling techniques apply to sketchup:

There is a great video tutorial I learned this off I would recommend before starting on organic modelling such as you are now:

                      Hope this helps.
