that's why there is no Mac and PC rooms... and you'll be happy to hear no one has suggested it...

.skp files still downloading as .php files. Thanks for trying.

jmac,
you need to report the thread where you could not download... and by any chance are you right clicking and selecting save target as?
-
Krisidious,
It happens on any thread containing an .skp file attachment. All I am doing is left clicking on the attached file. It downloads immediately...but as a .php file.

php is a webpage or html type format. a script actually
I would like you to a folder with skp files, do you see SKP logos? or blank icons?
oh are you on a mac? if so I won't be able to help with "file type associations"

Did this ever get resolved? I have the same problem, on a Mac, I can rename .php files with .skp but some download as php.html -- these don't work when renamed. Zip files are fine, I generally use Safari, but I found the same problem with other browsers
Thanks

for what it is worth, I am on mac and the reported [bad] behaviour is not happening to me. all the files download as skp.
cheers.

Thanks Chuck,
That's good news. Could you also confirm that after doing this trick your machine "remembers" this with further files or not?
-
Yes Bruce,
Mostly we'd think so but above there were also examples that skp file could be downloaded from other sites.

This behavior has just started for me, too (I'm on a mac (safari). I also just upgraded and deleted my caches last Friday. So I think it is a matter of Safari recognized .skp as a valid extension and assigning it to an app. When I remember how to do this I will get back.
Also, Apple has been posting Safari beta v.3 versions, have those of you experiencing the problems been upgrading to this version?
[edit] I checked the timing of this; it started after I upgraded to the new v.3 beta. Safari should automatically detect the file type so that's not the issue, nor is my cache deletion. So there is somehow some miscommunication with the new version and the website. I also use Firefox and this is not happening using that app.

Dang, Gaieus, you're fast. I erased my post as after I posted I realized that there were 3 pages I hadn't read yet and people were talking about changing extensions and I didn't want to be redundant.
The 'trick' was: right click on .php file. choose 'get info'. erase ;.php and type in .skp. when you hit return, there will be a pop up window asking if you want to change the extension. agree to this and the file will update to a .skp and the icon will change to the familiar Sketchup picture.
This has to be done for every file that comes in incorrectly. There is no 'remembering'

I should also say that the browser I use is firefox. could the problem be with safari?

I just tested this on four different Macs IntelMacBook Pro, G3 i Book, G5 iMac and G5 dual. The same results in all with Safari v2, older Explorer for the Mac also downloads as php (but one can rename on download pane). Latest Opera and Firefox both download correctly. The Safari and Explorer download "download.php" which can be manually renamed/extended to work--best both name and extension since name is always "download". A few come in as "download.php.html" these do not work even when renamed and extended. Skp files do download fine with Safari from the still existent Google Pro Site, Google groups is too much trouble to navigate to, so I didn't try. I have had this happen, on one CAD forum with the same board software (different file types). This leaves me to believe it's something in the handshake between the board software and the Mac browser for uncommon file types since image files download fine. I can't find a downloads setting in Safari. I wonder how it works with the PC Version of Safari?

Recently I have downloaded Safari 3 beta (for Windows). I can testify that it downloads the skp files as php. (I have other problems with it, too, so won't use it too much - I just want to make sure that when I build a website, it works on Safari/mac also).

i have just read on a brazilian paper that safari for windows is not yet working that well. may be the downloading problems have to do with its beta status.

Yes, Edson, beta is "just" beta for sure. Yet above some complain with Safari on MAC (though maybe they also use some beta version?).

i doubt it because safari comes with the operating system. i never heard of any mac user buying safari. if i am not mistaken, you can even download it for free from apple's site.

Well, I'm not a MAC user so I may be mistaken but there is, indeed, a Beta version for MAC, too here:
http://www.apple.com/safari/download/I don't know whether those posted these problems above use Safari 3 Beta (for MAC) or not. What I can tell that my version of Beta 3 (for Win) behaves exactly as faulty as described above - and of course I cannot compare it to earlier (non beta) releases for (as far as I know) this is the first release for Windows.
Also some of them testified that they had no problems with skp downloads on other sites so there may also be some problem on "our" end here, too.

they certainly released a beta version for mac, as you say, and very probably both versions are faulty. even being a mac user myself i do not use safari that much (except to access my bank account). i used netscape for some years and lately i have been using firefox.
cheers,

Firefox has so many advantages over any other browser I know that I can't imagine switching. Especially the very many add on's make Firefox truely customisable.
But... bugzilla is still growing fast. And none of the bugs I ever reported has ever been solved...I guess bugs are as much a fact of life in cyberspace as in nature...
