Dear Anne,
As far as I know, it seems that you may use Krita as a "texture editing tool" in sketchup. Very similar to what is described here:

Thank you, Mike. What I like the most about Krita is RGBA brushe and its capabilities to mime after real oil color brushes with a thick paint layer.

Not only does it describe the texture preparation to be used in Sketchup, but it also gives an overview of the Krita interface that I think may roll the ball.
