The Coffin Maker's Bench

I was rooting around in some stuff and came across an old article about a workbench based on a coffin maker's bench. The author had reduced the length from 13 feet long to only 5. Holes on the apron and top are for hold fasts or dogs. The front vise is designed to be easily removed when it isn't needed.
Getting ready to move so I decided to make a quick model and recycle the paper.

That vice/vise immediately reminded of the turbo vise...
Look at that beauty. 2 speeds. Pivots etc..
It even has a handle accessory to make retracting/extending even faster.
And the award for most over engineered vise goes to.......

Moving? Yeah. Staying in the same city though.
I've seen that vise and I agree, extremely over engineered and for me a bit spendy for a vise. It's the sort of vise that would get put on a bench made of exotic hardwoods polished to a nearly mirror finish and is never actually used.

Thank you. I suppose a lof of coffins these days are made of termite droppings so little need for a bench like this.

Benches of exotic hardwoods have their place. Case in point: The two shown here, by Frank Strazza, a superb woodworker in Texas. The contrasting hardwoods make the dovetails really pop. He uses Benchcrafted vise hardware, arguably the best for these Roubo-style benches. The image of the marquetry on the vise jaw is from a bench Strazza built for a violin-maker. I think Strazza also plays violin.
