Text tool leader line

If I create a text object and stretch it quite some distance from its anchor point, I then have a difficult time following its leader line down to said point when the drawing is crowded. As I zoom in, the text object vanishes.

That seems about right for leader text in SketchUp. If you must add the labels in SketchUp you could change the color of it and/or the font/size to help differentiate it from other labels.

i could also place a 3d text object on a flag made from a face and an edge - but it is not editable.

It would be if you use ThomThom's 3dText Editor to place it.
You could get better looking labels if you added them in LayOut.
