OVERLAPPING 3D TEXT

Type Tahoma's uppercase R and A into the 3D Text Tool with filled form checked. Now place the text into the model, explode it, group it and move it. Why does the face material get left behind? Is it due to the slight overlapping of the characters? Note - uppercase X and Y overlap - yet behave properly. And by the way, this tool should create objects as groups instead of components by default. How many times have you changed a 3D text component only to realize there were multiple copies throughout a big model that you really wanted to remain unchanged?

The faces aren't selected after the component is exploded so of course they wouldn't be included in the group if you immediately make the group after exploding. You have to select the faces, as well to get them to be included in the group.
This behavior is strange since exploding extruded, overlapping text or non-extruded, non-overlapping text leaves all edges and faces selected.
As for the text being made groups instead of components, I personally prefer they are made as components and frequently leverage that.

The main benefit of being a component is the automatic naming...
the kerning on the font overlapping is a sign of a font to avoid...

Who do you expect should fix it? Trimble? It's not their problem.
The fact is, there isn't enough kerning in this font to separate the letters. The R and the A overlap when used in that order. The same thing happens in Word and Photoshop. The font is designed to have tight spacing as you are experiencing.
As John wrote back in December of 2015, "the kerning on the font overlapping is a sign of a font to avoid..."
If you must use Tahoma, either make the R and the A as separate components and position them as you wish or maybe get in touch with Matthew Carter, the designer of the font and see if you can get him to fix it.
As far as the letters being combined in SketchUp, the edges are like any other edges in SketchUp.
