Issue rendering proxy objects

I've been trying to get into proxy objects to speed up the landscape part of my architectural renderings. The issue I'm having is that after I export a tree to a vrmesh proxy object, the component does not render as it should. It appears to also render the proxy object material, too.
Included are some images of the problem. What am I doing wrong?
