Components and groups when 3d printing parts

How important it is to make the part single solid object (no components or groups) when preparing the object for 3D printing?
I have been 3d printing my Sketchup models multiple times. The last time I noticed that I had forgot to make the part a single component and it was still printing just ok even though it was including components.

I have printed multiple shells succesfully. Perhaps it's a slicer, printing software question? But someone:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHKXXLI0vgQ. Perhaps no problems if there is no intersections (bad)?
