Tool for non-linear warping/bulging of objects?

Anyone know of a tool that will let me distort an object in a non-linear way? For instance, I'd like to be able to take something like a straight-sided cylinder and turn it into bulging barrel shape. I've done some looking but haven't seen anything -- suggestions welcome!

Vertex tools would do what you describe and similar things easily. You need to add points by duplicating rings along the cylinder.
