Help needed - can't correct cad files errors in sketchup
-
hi,
I'm working on altering a seriously modelled site and I'm having to do some parts from stratch.
I know that when I'm importing in cad/dwg/dxf files to sketchup to model from I'm going to be spending some time tidying up stray lines and making faces (and I'm still learning the shortcuts to this)
however I've run into the specific problem of the cad file not coming in flat and surfaces coming in broken and I'm tearing my hair out over it.
Ive attached a file to show my problem but I've tried redrawing lines and draping onto a flat surface and the flatten plugins (though I don't think I'm using them properly) and nothing is working.
anyone know if there is a way to solve this?
also does anyone have any tips in general of how the speed up the cad file to sketchup 3d model (especially with site plans)?
many thanks all

When it comes to importing CAD files, I generally use them as templates and make them again. CAD files are, for the most part, worse than useless.

If there are groups, exploded all too raw geometry and use Q JSALIGN to align to the same elevation.
And there are a couple of plugins called "Flaten to Plane"

I found that the easiest way to deal with this is to just bring the CAD file into Sketchup, go to top view, change the camera to parallel projection, export 2D graphic, pick dwg or dxf, then bring that file back into Sketchup, perfectly flat but you do loose your layering.
