Oh, so you can't just open an existing file. you have to insert it? no scenes, styles etc?

You can Open a "Model" (not insert) with scene(s), Materials, Styles, Layers etc..inside the free version online! πŸ˜‰

The big Free deficiency is the no use of Struture, Plugins! 😒 For the moment or never (?)
Here 2 scenes animation created with the free 2017 Make opened (not inserted) inside free online SU! πŸ˜‰
Scenes Animation Online of course are running like usual! β˜€
Seems no need to actualise! πŸ‘

            You can open a file.
            Screenshot - 6_14_2018 , 6_30_38 PM.png

Click Add model and then Browse over on the right. Select the file and then click Open.
            Screenshot - 6_14_2018 , 6_31_21 PM.png

If there are scenes and different styles in your file, they will be available in the model once you have it open. You can create scenes in SketchUp Free but you can't add your own custom styles to SU Free.

            Existing in model styles.

Pilou is correct that SketchUp Free currently has no facility to use extensions or plugins. Since he doesn't do anything with the native tools if there's a plugin to do it, this must be hard on him. πŸ˜‰ Just kidding you, Pilou.

              No problem! πŸ˜„
SU Free online stays the more easy against Vectary, OnShape, etc...

Oh but I don't see any files to open in that odd looking directory. If I go to open one from my computer, it opens in Su Pro instead and the online SU crashes.
It's OK. I just wanted to check it out. Not imagining much use for it, and I wonder what people who are new to SU think about it.

What do you see when you click on the file folder and then Open?

What do you see if you click on the hamburger menu in the left corner?

Since SketchUp Free isn't licensed for commercial use so I expect you probably wouldn't have a lot of use for it. As for new users, most of the remarks I've seen from new users are positive. Some of the long time Make users complain because it's different or because it currently doesn't have any way to use extensions.

It's fairly new and it's always getting updated and additional features added. Sometimes there'll be two or three changes in a week. When I get asked if this feature or that option is available in SketchUp Free, I open it up and look. There've been a couple of times I answered the question and within the next few days, that feature or option appears. Everytime a user opens it they are opening the latest version and it's transparent to them. Can you imagine updates to SketchUp Pro coming two or three times a week? You'd be forever downloading and installing it.

I see now you have to click on the Sketchup box which appears to be folder where SketchUp "Projects" are stored. And you must load the file there by dragging it, before you can open it in SketchUp Free.

I thought perhaps people would use to files I send to them. I thought I might use it to look at forum files that I can't open because I use an older version, which seems to work. Thanks!

I think I'd suggest they use the viewer instead.

                        That's not a bad idea.

I like the viewer. Seems like an online version for THAT would make sense.Or an executable export that worked like it. I use an older version of SketchUp to work in collaboration with others using the older version without having to save it backwards
