At work I was provided some .fbx files for a floor plan I'm working on. However, the fbx files are waaaaay too large - 65MB and 75MB each - to be useful in a SketchUp file, especially since each one needed to be copied and placed in multiple locations. The resulting .skp file wound up being almost 800MB for a single ballroom.

So, I pulled the .fbx into Maya and did a lot of mesh reduction and re-exported to get an .fbx about 6MB in size. Still kind of large for what it is, but it's something I can work with. I imported into SketchUp via FluidImporter and on the first pass somehow wound up with a file that was over 200MB; I don't remember what settings I tweaked or where, but the next re-import was better, but still a bloated 66MB, even after running CleanUp3. Removing the textures (which were way to hi res for my needs in any case) only netted me about 15MB, leaving the file still over 40MB in size.

So what gives? How am I getting a file that literally gets an order of magnitude larger, and how can I reduce it to something more manageable? I've attached the mesh-reduced .fbx for anyone who wants to monkey with it.

The forum won't let me attach an .fbx file, so here's a dropbox link for anyone who wants to monkey with it: https://www.dropbox.com/s/orwpibpkefgot2u/10x20_10x10%20back%20-%20forum%20copy.fbx?dl=0

And the bloated .skp file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hxrzr8o0ursds64/10x20_10x10%20back%20-%20forum%20copy.skp?dl=0

I converted it with SimLab Composer and got a 22.3mb skp 2017 file (no textures).

Then converted your bloated skp (with textures) to fbx with external textures, and got a 4mb .fbx file and a folder with 24mb of jpg textures.
