I am developing an exterior animation for an urban masterplan project. I've experience with rendering plugins for static images, but never animations. Any recommendations on what program/plugin works best? I've gotten recs from former coworkers for VRAY, lumion, and enscape 3D but am open to anything. Price range is flexible, but prefer to stay around/below 1K.

Most of the animations I create will be at a massing/context scale, so materials/landscape details are less critical than shadows and video quality. Would prefer a program that offers the user lots of control over styles. In terms of graphic quality I am after, the first 15 seconds of this video is pretty much what I am after. Clean and simple. https://vimeo.com/173956112

Any suggestions or advice appreciated. Thanks!

Depending if animations are yet made or not! πŸ˜„

And if it's very complex or not...

Maybe you can try Animator by fredo : it's normally working fine with Thea Render or Vray
so no problem of quality! πŸ˜„

else worlds of Unity / Unreal / Blender can be another solution...
        and it's free! πŸ’š

In French but you can put the Subtitles! πŸ˜‰

So for Blender Evee or Cycle as render engines
        Evee is Real time! πŸ˜„

        Frenchy Pilou
Is beautiful that please without concept!

I like to use Maya in conjunction with mentalray. If Fredo's Animator works with Thea and Vray as Pilou says, then that's pretty cool - although personally I don't find Animator that useful(sorry Fredo, it's a work of genius but it's not quite a fully featured animation program).

Lumion is great, but might not have the stylistic flexibility you're looking for.

I've recently been exploring Unity as a visualisation tool, and while there's a bit of a learning curve with regards to the more complex elements (it is built for making games, after all), it definitely has a lot of potential.

I think you can eliminate Lumion as a choice based on your criteria for render style and price. It would be overkill for massing animations.

I recommend the SketchUp plugin MSPhysics as a simulation and animation tool in combination with Twilight Free (Pro approx. 99 €) or Indigo RT (approx. 145 €). Single frame sequences, rendered and/or in SketchUp style, can be easily combined with video software to create movies and superimposed for the desired look.
